suggestions about a bitplane editor

I need to change images in game files. Of course those aren't IFF images.

I can rip the pics or roughly see where the data is, using gfxrip, but if want to change the data, that's really more difficult.

I don't want to change the plane order
I can't change the palette either

What I would need would be basically the same thing as gfxrip but with ability to change the plane data and save back, without changing the file logic (which can be custom).

For instance, if I notice some picture in a big file, and I want to change it, I'd like to change the bits and save back to the big file, with size unchanged, everything else unchanged.

What's the best way to do that?

GFXRip will save them as 256 colour so no use really

Why can't you use ArtPro and edit it in Dpaint etc.

Ive done it with Chaos Engine Tiles and I remember having a Debate with Hungary Horace and he changed a Turrican 2 tile like this.

and if Codetappers maptapper had a edit map and and Sprite editor that would of been sweet.

I think I'll write my own tool using python/pygame. I don't want to use 2 big programs, on the amiga side.
