Question Hard drives > Game installs & configs >

Hi there guys.

I was hoping that you could answer a couple of (possibly daft) questions
for me please.

Background:
I'm experimenting with FS-UAE and creating some differernt configurations
(Mainly for running some games).

However I'd like to install most of these games to hard drive where possible.

I'm mainly using A-1200's with some A-4000's for some AGA games

and I have created a complete Workbench 3.1, HD installation from the proper
Amiga Forever Workbench ADF's.

Questions:

1. If I start an A-1200 config, install a game to a directory HD,
then decide that I want to run it as an A-4000,
Can I just use an A-4000 config, and just point the requester to the
(already created games partition, and previously installed game)
from my previous A-1200 created HD ?

(I dont want to just "use" an 040 processor for the A-1200)
Im interested in using different Amigas to see how the game runs/plays
with different set-ups and configs for the respective Amiga models.

2. Or do I have to create a specific Workbench HD installation, and seperate game HD installation,
for each game and AGA model Amiga ?

2.1. E.G. - I install Alien Breed 3D to the games HD (on a directory HD) on an A-1200 config
Then I decide to spin up an A-4000, can I point the A-4000 config to the previously
installed Alien Breed 3D game, on the previously installed games dir
(That I had originally set up as an A-1200) ?

TIA for any help and advice.

Useful information:
Amiga emulator: FS-UAE 2.8.3 (downloaded from Synaptic)

OS: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
OS type: 64-bit
DE: KDE 5.12.9
Kernel: 4.15.0-99-generic
CPU: 4x Intel Core-2 Q8200 (@2.33 Ghz)
RAM: 8GB

If it's a directory hard drive you can just use it in whatever you want - just not
the OS portion - (which might work too) - just point the new config to the
GAME directory of the previously created game.

OH, the game might not work if there are OS specific configurations which might be a pain.

Except if a game is not intended for a CPU, in the vast majority of cases, pointing to the game from a different source should work just fine as long as you have all the files in the path (pay attention to the assignments).

Some games, in the other hands, "protect" themselves while installing and you won't be able to run them with a changed config (Dragon's Lair comes to my mind).

Yes with the same A4000 CPU and RAM it can run all the A1200 games except for a few exceptions.

It is not necessary

As said above there are no promlems if you are using the same CPU and RAM as A1200

Please note that not all games have an HD installer, some will have to be copied by hand where Assign may be needed, in other cases it will not work because the game is hardware bound to the floppy.

For "WHDLoad" games no problem

Thanks for the response and the information guys.
It's much apprecaited.

I've tried a couple of tests, (E.G. Installed a game in my "standard" A-1200 HD config)
and then tried to run it with an A-4000 config (pointing to the "games HD" (Dir HD)
but havent had much joy.

I think I'll need to have a bit more of a tinker, and retest.

Thanks again.
