Touching Fat Agnus = Crash **SOLVED**
Hey!
I got an Amiga 500 which does give guru meditation or crash without that bit randomly. First I reseated all dip ic's, but I dont have any tool for pulling out Agnus.. But I tried pushing it while the amiga is on, and I get it to crash everytime I do that.. So is it clearly only in need of reseating or is that perhaps indicitation of some other kind of fault? bad solder joint or something? Last edited by tenuke; 23 October 2014 at 20:13. |

Your suspicion is probably correct. As a long shot though, it could be shorting out underneath the board. Is the plastic insulation under the motherboard intact?

I have not yet taken out the motherboard, I will check that
And lets hope my local electronics shop doesnt ask absurd prices for plcc-puller.. Ebay has them for like 1$ but takes so long to ship. Or maybe I just visit electronics repair shop with the mobo and ask them clean the contacts of the plcc Propably would not cost more than the tool =) Last edited by tenuke; 19 October 2014 at 15:06. |

Sadly, you are probably going to have to have the Agnus socket replaced for a permanent fix, which does require some technical skill.

And I just did remember that in my childhood that socket was replaced once too.. I remember that they gave me the faulty socket when we went to pick the amiga up. No idea why they did give that though What on earth makes such socket go bad? Does A500 need recapping? atleast could have my A1200 recapped at the same time then. Thank you both for your help. p.s. I have been now playing some games without problems, so atleast it shouldnt be anything bigger issue :-) |

A500s don't usually need recapping. The early SMD capacitors used in the A1200 are much more prone to leaking than the older through-hole ones.

In past i had similar problem with A600 - issue was related to corrupted soldering on SMD resistor (IRQ line pullup) - carefuly check area around Agnus - use some pencil with rubber end - gently squeeze PCB perhaps you will be able to localize problematic area - resolder everything.

Bought PLCC Extractor tool, reseated agnus and problem was solved
Has now not been crashing randomly or if I press the agnus. Tool did cost a bit though, 20euros :F but didnt want to wait for month or more to get one from china for about free.. |
