Second Diskdrive won`t be detected under the newest Kickstart

Greetings,

I own an A1200 with 2 MB Chip and 8 MB Fastram and a 32 GB CF-Hardddisk. Therefore I needed the newest Kickstart, to get the 32 GB CF detected.

And now I have the problem, that my second disk-drive can be used in tools like xcopy but it will not be detected in Games. No matter in what game. Same shit with other drives. Do you have an idea how to adress that?

Thx in advantage!

Games are normally hard coded to use DF0.

Yes, DF0: to start but later Games are using a second drive like Lucas Arts adventures or games from sierra on 10 disks and more. The sceond drive works on Amiga 500 but not on Amiga 1200?!?

Will the external drive read disks for example in Workbench?

Check the 5V and 12V rails goin out if the external floppy drive port.

Use Amiga Test Kit to check the floppy drive signals of DF1.

If the disk is already inserted when I start the A1200, booting from HD, a DOS-Disk will be recognized once. But if I exchange the disc no recognation of the next disk happens, you hear only DF0: checks.

Maybe some Adress with the running VirusZ II 1.02 14.08.2004 or with the latest kickstart version 46.143, Exec version 46,45, Disk version 40.42?

Sounds like the disk presence sensor switch at the front of the drive not working. Check and clean it.

Which values do I have to consider, which tests have to run? Here an example from the latest Amiga Test Kit.

Press F5 to start the motor signal - the floppy drive will start spinning (typically) and the index pulses should increment.

When you put the disk in, the RDY signal should appear, and should disappear when you take the disk out.

What happens if you go one step back in the menu, remove the disk and press F5 for signal test?
I expect that you get "CHG" in addition to WPR and TK0.

Is this the case?

If you don't get CHG when you press the signal test without a disk in drive, the disk present-switch which solarmon mentions is defective or need a good clean.

That can explain that the computer recognizes only the first disk, meaning the system does not detect a disk swap.

The CHG signal will only change state on a STEP signal, so press F6 to send a STEP signal and see if the CHG signal appear or disappear after you insert or eject the disk.

Yes, the signal appears and disappears. And both external drives are working on my Amiga 500. This confuses me....

No, I`ve checked that and opened the drive. That was my first task. But after the old drive in this unit started to read errors I replaced the drive with a brand new of the same Type: NOS diskdrive 3.5 Zoll NEC FD1037A, configured for Amiga from this auction:

No matter, all units even before changing the drive are working on Amiga 500, but not on the Amiga 1200. Using in Xcopy is possible, but no disc swap in Workbench or recognition in Games. The other unit is an untouched, sealed Commodore 1010. I think it`s no compatibility issue.

Maybe a problem with the virus protection to prevent damage from infected disks?

Boot with no startup sequence and try to access the drive from shell?

What kind of virus protection are we talking about?

Sounds like a problem with the floppy interface on your A1200 then (related to diskchange)..
