New ADF "Disk Mimic" for OS 1.3

Hey Everyone!

I wanted to let any of the OS 1.3 fans/users out there to know some brand new software has dropped for it today. It's called Disk Mimic and it lets 1.3 users mount virtual floppy drives and "insert and eject" ADF files right from the desktop. You can use it via the CLI or a very cool looking and user friendly User Interface.

Yes, there is other software out there that allows this but it requires 2.0+ to run (and sometimes an 020). Disk Mimic is extremely lightweight, and free.

I made a video where I ultimately demo the software.

I also made an article version where you can download the entire package to install it to your own machines.

You can install it manually following the very nicely written instructions, or you can use the included Installer program and click a couple of buttons - it'll do the rest.

Hope any of the 1.3 folks here give it a shot - it's now part of my must-have software collection.

P.S.
It has been submitted to Aminet as well and should appear there soon.

Here are some screenshots of what it looks like:

This is great! Similar to GoADF I gather but nice to know it works on OS 1.3! Can this be used with say X-Copy if it was ran from Workbench and disk mounted in background?

It would not work with x-copy. You should use transdisk, transadf or whatever instead to write the adf to floppy directly.

Lol I could just write it directly from laptop but just to over complicate matters for the hell of it!

@Jope

Since DiskMimic drives behave just like real drives, you can use Diskcopy to write and read ADFs to and from floppy disks - yes!

You can also create a blank ADF by making a copy of an ADF image, inserting that image into a DiskMimic drive, and then formatting it.

The ADFs used by Disk Mimic really do behave like a physical floppy disks. It's awesome.

I didn't fully understand your question. So I asked Mr. Brenner.

"If he's wondering if he can copy a copy-protected disk to an ADF image, then the answer would be no. X-Copy is a program that copies copy-protected floppy disks, and it talks directly to the hardware to achieve this. DiskMimic drives are soft drives; there is no underlying hardware.

If he wants to copy a non-protected floppy to an ADF image, then yes, he can use Diskcopy to do so."

Hope that helps.

@Nobby_UK

Yes, if you want FFS image support you add a separate entry in your mountlist for however many FFS drives you want to be able to support.

For me personally, I added 3 "normal" drives and 1 FFS drive to cover most of my bases. But everyone can do however many they like. You could do one of each, or all FFS - it's entirely up to you.

Apart from fun tests, I would not recommend using the OS diskcopy for any preservation work, as it does not produce 1:1 copies. Instead please use transdisk or some other ADF reading tool. :-)

If you use Disk Mimic on OS 2.x or 3.x you don't need anything, the FFS Floppies will be mounted with the same mountList.

@intric8
Good program, installed on my OS 1.3, also tried on an RTG system, the GUI however is not well visible on an RTG system

Nice :-D this is a really nice alternative to things like XFS, DMS for 1.3 and certainly the first with a UI

Love it!
