Format a 20gig HD with the Amiga Forever package

Since I'm a "real amiga user" I must confess I'm a 99% complete newbie when it comes to emulators
I have Amiga Forever 6.0 indtalled here and a military spec Maxtor 7200rpm 20 gig HD which I want to partition and install PFS3 on in Winuae (Amiga forever)...can it be done? if it's possible can someone please give me a small guide
I launched the standard Amiga forever config which is some sort of OS3.9 and started hdtoolbox but no drives where shown so I don't know where to go from here

You have to open WinUAE's configuration window (I think it is called "Configuration" in the AF launcher) and add the HDD to WinUAE's HDD list. Don't forget to save the changed config before you launch the emulaton. Then change HDToolbox' tooltypes to point to uaehf.device.

Does the drive appear in the PC's BIOS ? Does Windows know the drive ? Did it offer you to partition/format the drive ? *Did* you partition/format the drive ? (You shouldn't !)

If at least the first two questions are true, you could try the following: open a DOS prompt, CD to WinUAE's directory and enter: winuae.exe -disableharddrivesafetycheck

Warning: be sure not to choose your Windows harddrive from the list, it will destroy all your data !!!

The drive is connected thru USB, I activated it in Windows XP's admin. tools and created a 200meg partition just to check that winuae and windows can find the drive and it works ok.
Have now removed the partition and inactivated the hd with Win Xp admin tools.
Will try the thing you mentioned now.
The reason I want to prep this hd in winuae is because I didn't work with it connected to my Fast ATA 4000 in my A4000 I
m typing this message on now.

You partitioned the drive -> drive now contains MBR partition table -> WinUAE won't show it anymore because it is PC formatted.

WinUAE only shows drives that containt proper Amiga RDB or are zeroed (first few blocks) without (dangerous) command-line parameter..

Got things working here, the hd is partioned and PFS3 installed.
Did tye PFS3 install on my A4000 instead because I couldn't get hdinsttols to find the hd in Winuae.
Now I have probs with the fast ata 4000 (crap card), have installed WB3.1 on my boot partition and WB boots fine with the hd installed to the onboard IDE but when installed to the fast ata I get a ramlib error when booting.
Have heard that other people also dislike the fast ata 4000.

I have one, too and never had any problems. It's quite new, though, perhaps they updated the firmware and corrected some errors.

Mine is also brand new, bought it along with my Mirage 4000 pro tower.
Only using it until I can get my hands on a good 68pin SCSI hd for the SCSI controller on my CS MKIII board.
Do you use the "split" or "non-split" mode in fast ata prefs?

If you are after really big HDDs (20 GB and above), you should consider buying a SCSIDE adapter. An IDE HDD + Adapter might be cheaper than a SCSI HDD.

Just like any other SCSI unit.

There are jumpers on the back to set the ID and either there is a terminator you can enable on the adapter board or you need a terminated cable.

Personally I love cables with built in active termination. :-)
