Wink When does a console\computer become Retro?

I was reading the forums just now particulary the perfect game thread and someone mentioned Final Fantasy 9 which lead me to thinking about the original playstation and the memories i have of playing classic games and the ones i still dig out every now and then (final fantasy IX being a perfect example as i play through it a least once a year maybe more)

Anyway i began wondering about wether that was technically retro now seing as its now two console generations behind so i thought id ask for your opinions on this. I know this isn't directly an amiga related thread but the amiga still has people developing for it correct so if your definition of retro heads down that route then is the amiga retro?

Personally i think that two or three generations behind is a good standpoint for classification but what do you think?

Nicely summed up

There is no definitive answer to the question, it's a matter of personal opinion, personally I'd say any console that's no longer available or supported is retro, but then that would include a console like the GameCube which is only about six or seven years old. Then again the Dreamcast is from the same generation, albeit earlier than the others, and I think that's considered retro by a lot of people now.

No black and white answer, I think.

Speaking for myself, it's everything from the 16-bit era and before but Cyberdruid sums it up perfectly well

Console is retro when they stop producing and selling it. Games might not be retro at that point, as there still might be some developers with new titles even at the time console is retro.

IMHO DereamCast, GameCube and xBox are retro, while PS2 is still being sold by $ony. Everything older is retro as well.

I would say that a console has gone retro only when it can no longer be bought new AND when it's second hand price starts to go up instead of down.

Even then there are games still being made and sold for the Dreamcast but I'd definitely consider it a retro machine.

EDIT: It's not even 10 years old, shit.

This "Retro" buzzword must be dropped, IMO !
I still play C64 games because they're fun and addictive as hell to play, not because of some trendy "retro" feeling !!
