No Challenge Mode In Max Rally??? (Getting it to work on a CD32)

What's this all about then? In Max Rally (http://hol.abime.net/2426) I seem to have no music at all, but in the review I read at Amiga Magazine Rack it mentions turning it off!

Anyone got a version with music?

Scrap this - I was using an unofficial CD32 port without the correct assigns (*sigh*)

Fixing it now for a new compilation.

Ah - another problem.

When selecting 'Championship', then 'Challenge' mode, the countdown starts for the race, then as the race begins I get a guru.

This is the same with the unofficial CD32 port I found, and the disk version on planet emu. I assume [b] in the Tosec title means it's a bad image. Has anyone got a version in which this mode works?

Embarassing... Just created a CD32 disc and tried it out on real HW... and it works! Must be an emulation bug in winUAE!

Sorry for wasting everyones time. I think this probably means that the [b] should be removed from the TOSEC entry - I've confirmed it works here on real HW and have been playing it all afternoon.

Right... the plot thickens.

If you run MAX-HD on a CD32 (the installed start-up that assigns max1 and max2 to the current directory) you get music and the intro, but the game prompts you to remove the write protection (obviously impossible on a CDr).

If you run MAX (the executable) from hard disk (even with write protect set) then the game works with music, but no intro. Selecting 'Instructions' prompts the user to insert disk 1, but aside from that the game seems to work OK.

If you run MAX (the executable) from a CDr on a CD32 the game runs as above but it fails to load any music (and in the challenge mode even the sound effects are missing)! Really odd!

I've had a look at the MAX program file in a hex editor, but it's obviously packed (it calls explode library).

Is there any way to fool the CD32 into thinking that the CDr is not write protected? Obviously, saving records won't work, but if you could get past the 'remove protection' message the game should play OK.

The only solution I can think of is something called WHDLoad.
However that's probably not gonna happen any time soon as there's no original disks/disk images available.

You should be able to unpack the executable with XFDDecrunch.

Well, it looks like SoftHut sell the game on their site, if anyone wants to check if they're selling an original copy? I'd try it myself, except a) I'm stupidly overdrawn atm and can't risk such an expensive purchase besides that, and b) the disks would be of no use to me due to having no Amiga to run them on, nor a means of dumping them.

I do have a CD of "Aminet Games" however, which appears to include the game, so I'll take a look at that one in a mo.

Also possible with missing XFD installation, because explode.library gives away the use of Peter Struijk's IMPLODER, which is not too hard to find.

It seems that the only solution left is to hack the game executable so that it doesn't check for write-protection when it accesses disk 2. Unfortunately, this is beyond my skills.
