Simple way to copy from Mac to Amiga?

Hi, I have:
  • MacBook Pro
  • Correct serial cable connecting Amiga to Mac (via USB to serial adapter)
  • Amiga 500 with Kickstart 3.1 and CF HDD
So all the hardware is ready to go. But I'd prefer not to have to emulate Windows to get Amiga Explorer up and running – I'm having trouble finding a legal Windows XP source disc to even install from.

Is there any simple way to push files to Amiga RAM disk, floppy or HD?

I found a way to install Windows XP, as I believe the answer to this thread is... "No."

Use a terminal program on both ends instead, if you insist on using serial.

I'd just remove the CF card, plug it into a card reader in the MAC and make a FS-UAE config file that mounts the raw device as a hard drive in RDB mode.

You can get an example config file by launching fs-uae from the launcher against a hdf you've created before. Then look at the process list with ps -ef | grep fs-uae to find out where it made the temporary config file. Copy that config file somewhere safe before you quit the emulator and then edit it.

Awesome.

"Then look at the process list with ps -ef | grep fs-uae... "

Would you kindly clarify for a FS-UAE novice?

When you have the emulator running, open a new terminal, type in (or copy/paste):

ps -ef | grep fs-uae

Press enter.. You should see the path to the config file given to fs-uae as an argument in the process list snippet that is printed onto your screen.

This is not fs-uae specific knowledge, this is unix knowledge.

Got it. What do I need to change to mount it as a raw Device in RDB mode?

Edit: Don't worry, I got XP going. Amiga Explorer via serial is fast enough and reliable.

hardfile2=rw,DH0:/path/to/volume,0,0,0,512,0,,uae
uaehf0=hdf,rw,DH0:/path/to/volume,0,0,0,512,0,,uae

Should get it showing up under uaehf.device in the emulation.

Serial is so slow that it makes my eyes bleed, but if you're ok with the wait, then why not. :-)

Sorry for necro..... but this sounds like what I want right now, at least untill I can get the Amiga to playnicelt wirh Skys' fibreoptic modem..... can I use "any" usb2serial for this? I've got Redmond running in a Parallells VM, good enough to run StarWars: The Online Republic, so got me hopes up when I saw this thread pop up in a general google-foo about usb2serial

If you capture the usb serial into the vm, it should work.

Sorry, but installing Windows in a VM for the sole purpose of copying files to an Amiga is nothing short of insane.

Do yourself a favour and follow Jope's good advice.
