68882 fpu from China

Hi.

I am looking at buying a 68882 fpu and a crystal for my accelerator. Has any one had any experience with buying them from China/Hong Kong?? They appear very cheap on ebay and some with free international posting (Under $10NZD £5.21).

Thanks

I bought five of the surface mount 68882's from here:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1pcs-MC6888...item3cc6210e1d

The first one worked, and I have not tested the others.

Thanks chue. It makes sense to buy more than one if they are that cheap . Do you have a source for crystals?

For older electronic components, I usually buy from highly rated sellers on Ebay. If pricing is cheap enough I figure it is ok to risk it.

I usually buy more than one of each component to reduce the likelihood of getting a bad one. That and my soldering ability is less than stellar

Not sure about the FPU quality, but shipping from China is very cheap because of international postage agreements, it is basically a subsidy for China and many other countries.

I bought from these guys and didn't have any problems. Recommended to some friends and they had a positive experience also.

68882 from Aliexpress

I bought two different incarnations of 68882 from Aliexpress.
The 40 MHz seems to be from Motorola and the other has some other company logo (33 MHz version). See attached picture.

I was told that these are laser engraved fakes, but both of them were recognized when I placed them in my 68030 based Macintosh Performa 450 in the FPU slot. Not sure what software to use to test them on MacOS 7, but they are recognized and listed as 68882 in MacEnvy. Will they work on Viper 1230? Do I need to match the exact MHz (33A for the 33 MHz version), or I can place the 40 MHz version as well?

On the Macintosh both chips show no difference when inserted, since they are clocked to the 68030 of the Performa, which is 25 MHz.

The logo on the 33mhz one is Freescale Semiconductor.

The worry with Chinese stuff tends to be remarking lower speed parts as higher speed ones.
