A site intending to serve as a forum and archive for the magazine Amiga Power.

It isn't much to look at but it has one issue for viewing. The forum is kindly hosted by woody.

Please post any ideas or suggestions either here or idealy on the AP forum.

Great Idea

Just a suggestion.
Why not make PDF version of the magazine, its more usefull for reading. Or putting a next/previous page in the buttom, so it's easier to browse. But I think PDF is to prefer. I would gladly make it for you, if you like, just give me note.

Yes a forward back button would be a good idea. I shall do it in the morning.

Can the scans be read properly? I think PDF-ing is a good idea as I believe they can be searched and archived by Google [I remember Akira saying].

If youc an do it let me know.

I am not zipping them as the bandwith will be too much and I dont want people leeching. If you help out you can have the zips.

What safeguards does HOL use to prevent leeching in this mannner?

I really need some storage space for future issues. Is anyone willing to host some of the issues for me? They can ofcourse access all the currantly scanned in issues and will receive full credit. This will only work if everyone gets together.

I emailed FP but again received no reply. If they complain they complain, it can still be spread amongst the faithful.

By the way, what kind of scanner are you using? A3?

I tried to scan an Amiga Power issue but the pages didn't fit on my scanner which is slightly bigger than A4, so I had to put them together in Photoshop X_x

The magazines vary in size both in regard to pages and actual page size.

Have you scanned copies in already? if so can you let me know which ones as I am not going to scan issues that somebody else has done!

I am afraid that I do not read French so I cannot use your link.

I didn't scan any full issues currently. I gave up after 5 pages because, as I said, the pages were oversized and I had to fiddle around in Photoshop too much.

The link basically says: Scan the pages with 150DPI in JPG format and save them in a quality that results in a filesize of about 350-500kb. Then there's a whole renaming convention like Tosec.

I scanned (and I'm still scanning...) some german mags for myself

and the results come out pretty good that way.

Nice to see you got the site online Peanut

It's a good start and a very worthwhile project for the whole community.

Whilst it would be nice to see the mags in PDF I agree you are going to have bandwidth issues, and you'll probably end up in a few months/years when you have lots of issues to download on there with people just visiting the site with their favourite download manager and downloading all at once (think all the www sites that host R0Mz).

Why not make the "masters" as PDF, distribute these to a few people and no doubt they will end up being on certain FTP servers, and the edonkey network.

Your site could probably get away with having HTML versions of Amiga Power which would save bandwidth and still have the search functionality. People could still leech your entire website with a website downloader but there would be less inclination to do so.

At the end of the day wether you have the magazine as JPG's, text files, HTML files or PDFs we still get to read it. Format is only important for preserving, not for entertainment (reading). I doubt very much people will be printing out entire issues and if they want the real magazine I am sure they can be found on ebay.

I agree with other comment that forward/back buttons are needed for navigation.

I am thinking that for the time being maybe it would be better to just host the pages that have reviews on them and then produce a reviews indext. This would cut downt he necessery space and bandwith yet remain just as usefull. Any features can then be put up if wanted.

I think this is good compromise as it reduces the space whilst retaining the usefulness.

This is a very ambitious project in terms of bandwidth and scanning time!

Great worthwhile site however. I've noticed how more and more people are getting involved in projects recently. Nice to see everyone staying active in the Amiga scene. Preserving old mags is great and hopefully we can get others done in the future even if it's unrealistic to host them online.

Woody, is this your new forum then? Great to see you've finally managed to get something in place!

Congratulations for preserving this Amiga legacy for the internet community.
I never bought any Amiga Power magazine, only peeked through it at my newsagent. Around 1995 the mag disappeared there from the shelves, so it has been almost nine years since I last 'read' the mag.

My only suggestion is to eventually put thumbnails (size 150 x 206 or smaller) of the scanned pages online. This makes navigation even more easier. The thumbnails don't need to be in high-res JPG format - PNG format will do.

My other point of advice is to take precautions against leechers. Their actions take up a lot of bandwidth and have destroyed many efforts to put magazines online. Iian Black (host of http://www.zzap64.co.uk) has found a way to allow users only to view 80 pages every four hours. How it exactly works I don't know, but maybe you can contact him.
