Happy GVP A530 restoration with pimp my RF shield... loadsa pics 56k go away!

Well the A530 turned up today from America. Not in the best of shape - filthy - so I had to do something about that

Today I've stripped it down and given the top half a damn good clean, plastic/rf shield/removing old fan and cleaning up top cover switch...

So here's all the bits stripped before cleaning...

Here we have A530 board/case and 170mb hdd.

Stripped away the RF shield to find all this gunk underneath. eew.

Next up, pic of the processor/fpu chipettes.

Turbo switch removed from top case...

Fan now removed - just a matter of heating one side with the glue and pulls straight off.

Now plastic cover has a bath! Notice the soap coming through the turbo hole! Super foam was just as fast as 68030

After bath and drying

Inside of case now clean

Erm with shipping and import duties it was about £180! I might try and find a bigger drive for her - 1gb would be nice

Had a time getting her up and running this morning to test, one of the simms had come loose during transit so refused to turn on. Works great though now Super fast and sysinfo makes it quicker than a standard A3000!

Done some more cleaning on the pcb frame tonight

Ready for stripping...

Removed the bridge that sits over the main connector to the A500.

Removed the standoff screws on the rear scsi port

Board then slid out with no trouble

Bottom of board (yet to be cleaned)

After polishing main frame

Underside after polishing - shame about the scratches but I won't see this once it's fitted anyway

Bridge refitted for photo and polished too!

To follow;

Cleaning of A530 system board (waiting for cleaning stuff for that )
Fitment of new Papst fan
Fit new mounts for HDD - two are missing
Install workbench

@Paul_s

now thats a dedicated strip tease... absolutely wonderfull...

all i gotta do now is put some more money in the slot before the curtain goes down!!!

wonderfull job my friend, indeed lots of dedication, one to be proud to have pictures of....

recently one of my current projects had me put some 1200 plastics in the dishwasher... *more on that later*

I notice you are looking for a larger SCSI one drive?

it just so happens I have a few spare 2GB 50pin SCSI disks... you can have one for postage

just shout me a PM

Super job, wondering what chemical stripper (fnarr!) was in that bath? Wonder how well that would clean up other plastics....

I just used normal washing up liquid and a few scoops of some Vanish cleaner which has whitener in it I think. It's only yellowed slightly on the outer edges, rest of it's in great shape

What's the bet that the dirt acted as a UV filter and now you've removed it the plastic yellows instantly on exposure to sunlight?

There was one on fleabay missing the RF shield too!

I've just noticed as well the original mount tray for the HDD is missing on mine (amiga format had a pic of one taken apart).
I had some standoff screws supporting the HDD instead. Not the end of the world I guess....

If your RF shield is missing, you _may_ have a GURU ROM fitted as the shield doesn't fit with the new ROM in place.

I don't have a guru rom (no full 030/fpu either ) and also have an HD fitted on standoff screws (on eight to be precise, to accomodate an heatsink). Before I put my A500 back together again, I'll start cleaning it too. Maybe not as thorough as you did, but a little soap and polishing would do a world of good!
