I doubt its copy protection related, I originally did this install nearly 20 years ago.

The bug only manifests itself with extensive play, and as Jeff has said, you cant just replay from where you were last at, you have to replay from the beginning, testing every table feature over and over again.

Putting text like that near any actual copy protection is monumentally stupid, it gives crackers ideas, however, putting text like that to irritate crackers, sure, very sensible,they might waste time looking.

Platforms are easy to playtest, pinball games there are no short cuts.

Apart from the score (stored in binary coded decimal) I couldn't find any other variable (targets lit, etc...)...

My real pinball is easier to test: remove the glass, and activate all targets by hand

Real pinball machines also break a lot more frequently.
