Since you have the KS3.1 roms, this is required for proper support of course. I thought there was a filesystem patch as well, not sure if it came with OS3.5 or not, I think it did

So having said this, the drive should work fine if this is already in place.

There should be no problems, as your Amiga runs OS3.5. This version includes updates to FFS (Fast File System) to allow for just this sort of thing, i.e. HDs >4GB.

Plug 'n' play!

Thats great

But as the 15gb is going to the main drive am I right in thinking it will only pick up the first 4gig's then after 3.5 is installed I can get to the rest of the space?

You should be able to get the entire disk space if you boot off of the OS3.5 Install disk

there was a similar discussion here:
http://www.abime.net/eab/showthread....highlight=hard

Right now, I'm using my 20gb HD with os3.9 but it is my second HD (connected to 4 way ide adapter with another HD and a cd-rom) Whenever I boot without startup-sequence, or from another drive that os 3.5 of 3.9 is not installed, I cannot access it. Else it works fine.

Caveat: Maximum partition and/or file size is still 4GB. The capability to recognise larger devices is a patch, essentially.

It's all about 32-bit vs 64-bit arithmetic. Largest number storable in 32 bits = binary 4 billion.

New Style Devices (NSD) is a new specification for device drivers in AmigaOS which adds commands for storing locations on drives using 64-bit operations. NSDPatch is built into SetPatch from OS3.5 onwards. HDToolBox, Format and Info are all now updated. Booting from a <OS3.5 drive means that the new Setpatch is not loaded, and the extra drive size is not seen.

Note! Certain software will not work properly if located 'after' the first 4GB, for example ReOrg and DiskSalv.

Sorry about the sluggish response time, ElectroBlaster. I was involved in a bit of a SlamTilt tourney.

Good info, so to play it safe then you may want to consider no bigger then 4GB partition sizes

Thanx guys

im going to fit it later on and have a crack at it!
i might leave the 1gig in as the primary drive and use the 15gb as a slave drive maybe.....

I'd say you better partition it. You can use the SFS filesystem too, instead of having to upgrade to OS3.5

You can use loadmodule (available in MMU.library package on aminet) to make filesystem resident and others 3.5/3.9 add resident.

Personally i use Blizkick to do such thing as i have only ROM3.0 and so i need to kick a 3.1 image file.

SYS:C/BlizKick DEVS:Kickstart/kick40068.A1200 EXTRESBUF=116000 HOGWAITBLIT MODULE NoClick BBlank RamLibstack Filesystem.resource Fastfilesystem.resource Fastfilesystem scsi.device exec.library SpeedyIDE ram-handler LIBS:icon.library QUIET

Once you have boot 1 time, all are resident and so all partition are available.

Hope that help.

But im still stuck as i can only get 8gig's outta it? i think im not getting this right as i read about a 20gig drive working fully but with os3.9 where im using 3.5.....oh yeh also im getting silly problems with the drive saying its write protected.. the drive is fine on our pc's tho???

// RetroMan : Please keep it simple and post these issues in one thread ... no need to open a second one ....
