Won't record video

I get that as soon as I press the start button after the AVI output has been properly set (yes, the path is correct and .avi is there) Happens no matter the codec, with or without sound recording enabled and with the latest beta (not sure about 1.6.1)

Can a buggy codec pack interfere even when none of the codecs from the pack has been selected? I use "Full Frames (Uncompressed)"

Unfortunately yes.. It can prevent ALL programs to write any AVIs at all..

Ah, other possibility is display size that isn't divisible by 8 or 16 (and if this is the reason, you should have tested with 1.6.1 first...)

Well, just tested it on 1.6.1 and the problem is still there. The resolution I was trying to record at was 320x256 so shouldn't have been a problem anyways.

The only codec pack I have installed is the latest ffdshow.

80040154 means 'class not registered' and happens when a COM(+) component isn't installed properly. Hard to tell what causing it, but you could look it up in the event viewer and post the whole description of the error event.

Hmm, that's strange. Well, you should remove/reinstall anything video codec related first before you take more drastic measures

I don't think I'd want to go through all that!

Anyhow, no other application on my computer has problems writing avis so it must be something very, very specific, perhaps related to AviSynth?

Generally all programs use some more modern video API than those that WinUAE use. Note that I don't care.

Well the other option is to reinstall Windows...
Okay, maybe you can have a look at the event logging settings (not sure were they are atm, but they shouldn't be too hard to find). More infos about the error could provide a quite easy solution (re-register the COM component that causes the error).

No luck with the event viewer, but here's what SHERLOCK - The Codec Detective has to say about my system: no broken codecs

I would think that ffdshow is the problem, install a stable version.

The SHERLOCK codec test was also run without ffdshow installed, and Codecs.txt (have a look) reported nothing wrong with the remaining codecs.

Of course this application is old, but never failed me before.
