Where to get key file for Magic User Interface 5.0?
I am using AmigaOS 3.9 on m68k emulation.I wonder if it is legal to download and use the key file from MUI 3.8 to use it for MUI 5.0? I can't find any key file to purchase on www.sasg.com. I just can't find any place to buy it. If so where and what will it cost me?
Thanks in advance! Amiguy. |

As far as I am aware MUI 5 is still being updated on AmigaOS 4.1 FE as it comes bundled with the Hyperion OS.
Have you tried the links on IBrowse Download links? |

What about classic users that want to buy it or Vampire users? Sure, I have it on my X5000 but I don’t have it on my Vampire. My MorphOS laptop does have it built in which is nice.

The MUI 3.8 keys work fine with MUI 5.x.
In the past I believe people have contacted Stefan Stuntz via e-mail, presumably via the link on www.sasg.com, and he has sold them a key. However, as he no longer has the ability to generate original keys, this is a generic key registered to somebody else. There was a discussion about MUI keys a while ago as people weren't too happy that, despite paying, they didn't have the key in their own name, so a couple of us started looking at reverse engineering the keyfile and were successful in generating personalised keys. However, because the software is still technically copyrighted and for sale, it was decided to provide personalised keys as a service to legitimate purchasers only via EAB. The key generation software adds an EAB watermark and the process is handled by BippyM, one of the EAB Global Moderators - see this post for more information https://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=101952 |

My two cents: don't use anything over MUI3.8 (with muimaster020) on AmigaOS3.x.
It's clearly not designed for classic systems. While it works, it was extremely sluggish on a 060 with 64MB of RAM. Most programs developed during the 2000s also behave strangely (weird icons, window sizes, etc.) as some default has been changed in MUI 4.0, probably targeted towards bigger screens and more powerful PowerPC-based systems. It seems there was some controversy around on how the current Dev is upgrading MUI, completely ignoring the needs of classic systems, but I can't find any links to it, right now. |

MUI5 was developed for MOS and most of the enhancements are CPU intensive eye-candy. Last edited by James; 10 July 2024 at 02:06. Reason: Fixed image |

MUI5 was developed by the same two people who were responsible for YAM - and these two publicly abandoned YAM development a while ago because of the "difficulties of developing anything for the Amiga platform". Couple that with the legal issues surrounding MUI5 for AmigaOS - there are very credible claims it's at least partially based on stolen MUI for MorphOS sourcecode - and it's pretty unlikely this will see any further development.
Only m68k application I can think of that (optionally) uses MUI5 features is IBrowse, but even that doesn't require it. Best to ignore MI5 and stick with good old MUI3. And yes, you can still buy the keyfiles, so go buy it. Be warned though that Stuntz often takes ages (literally!) to reply. Doesn't matter - just transfer the money and use a keyfile downloaded from the net. |

So what? MUI5 works pretty well already.

Yeah, don't use anything better. You can also get a legal (generic) keyfile if you purchase AmiKIT. |

Not sure why you're getting all worked up about this? "Better" is a pretty subjective term. MUI5 is slower, a lot less mature and its legal status is questionable. IMHO, that makes MUI 3.8 the better product.
Why do you think MUI5 is "better"? Quote:

Agreed, which is why I still use 3.8 on my real A1500, but on faster systems I don't notice the difference.
How does that work? This is getting onto dangerous ground considering the history of MOS itself. [Runs for cover] All I will say is that Stefan Stuntz allowed them to continue, and that is good enough for me. Which is fair enough, but why are you so keen to put others off from trying it and deciding for themselves. It is more flexible and allows for a better looking setup (yes I am shallow). No it isn't, yes it was and no they are not AFAIK. |

Well, if 3.9 was released for m68k, then I'm obviously recommending 3.9 over 5.0. Where does one get that version?

I’m holding out for MUI 6.0.
