Would this 2,5" > 3,5" adapter work in an A1200?

Hi,

as I need a cable for my A1200 to get those 3,5" HDs working again I was wondering if this adapter would do the job. I've no idea where to get a suitable cable here in Finland this is the closest and cheapest thing I could find.

The price is 3€ and I could get it right from the shop instead of ordering that 7€ cable (plus postage) from Amigakit, which would probably take at least a week to get here.

Hi mk1,

Yes, that looks good to go with!

Grab one quick!

PS. It'll stick up in the air without at least a short 44-pin extension cable, but you'll be lucky to close the case anyway, unless you run it externally.

I think this adaptor is flat enough to close the case.

I only have that kind who have a vertical board: that one don't allow the case to close.

BTW, mk1, you need to source a proper power lead. The one on this adaptor only carries the +5V.

It's a pity you're in finland as I've got the ideal lead going spare - you could have had it for a pint of beer I used it when I had my 3.5" drive squeezed into my desktop 1200.

Good point, rkauer. Still, it's a part many of us will have in our "spares box", so let's hope mk1 has one of these.

yes I`ve got something similar to that for attachin 3.5" drives

but you probably need to take the power of the floppy header on the motherboard of your a1200

Thanks for all the answers!

I might fetch one today or tomorrow. Getting power for the hard drive is not a problem but I'm not quite sure what kind of power cable I'd need for that bit.. Got to do some more research unless someone could show me an example.

I have a pile of those. It's a little tricky fitting it on the motherboard, but you can do it for both A1200 and A600.

Naturally they are really meant to be connected to a hard drive. :-)

Ok, good to hear it works. How did you solve the power issue?

I didn't.. I just happened to test whether they fit when we had this discussion on the saku forum.

Oh, just figured out from the Saku forum that the power cable can be left unused. Well, that sorts it out then. Off to buy one today!

Got the adapter today. Can't believe how frikkin bent all the teeth were once I opened the package. Almost went back and returned the damn thing, but a bit of bending with a screw driver fixed it.

After about 15 minutes of trying I finally managed to get the adapter in place. It fits like a charm if you don't count the extremely tight installation.

So there it is and no more need to worry about ripping cables or bending the teeth on the motherboard. A good deal!

Oh yes, and now I can finally get all those PD, game and demo collections transfered to the PC too.

Didn't dare doing that although it crossed my mind too, though I was equally scared of bending and cutting the pins on the motherboard.

No need to cut anything, just wiggle it in. :-)

Just plucked an a600 mobo from my shelf for that pic, didn't really give enough of a damn to clean it. :-P
