A600 or A1200?
It is me, rattus. I return like the plague to piddle all over the forums with my stupid questions
grrrr. When the previous owner of my 2nd-hand A1200 (my brother) discovered my plans for upgrading/expanding and general messing around with it he decided he wanted it back! His stupid excuse was that there were still some programs of his on the HD (a few worthless AMOS projects) and he didn't want me to change anything and ordered it to be put back into the attic to rot :eek I figured my Amiga dreams were over and loaded up MaxUAE....But it wasn't enough, I've tasted blood and I want more of the real thing! But what machine to get? I like the A600 because it's small and cute and sells for peanuts on ebay, but it doesn't have the AGA chipset. I also like the A1200 because it's powerful, but it's more expensive than the A600 and isn't as compact (although it is a big improvement to the A500!) I want some opinions on this. I can live without the numpad (use of an old iMac keyboard has trained me well ) but can I live without the AGA? Will the A600 be more compatible with games and so on? Can I keep this thread alive for more than a few hours? etc |

oh whatever... I think you are better getting a cheap A1200... Why? Because of WHDLoad. It'll be much more enjoyable on an A1200 with 2MB Chip and extra 8Meg of Fast. That could be had for pretty cheap I suppose. And if you need more juice later, it's expandable enough. I wouldn't go and expand an A600 farther from putting 2MB Chip on it. I still dont trust the 030 accelerator's possible temperature problems. Then again, the A600 will be more compatible with old floppy games. but most of the really old ones will still not work (though this could run smoothly with WHDLoad if you have 2MB Chip) The AGA games are really nice, but I happen to have more ECS/OCS games on my A1200 than AGA games! In any case, bang a 800+ MB drive on it for maximum joy. |

cheers
yea, I couldn't agree more! At least he could have used it for something, but no! It has to go back into the sweltering attic and remain there for all eternity! are men all pigs or does it just run in my family?
oh well...I think a cheap A1200 would be a wiser move even though there are complete, boxed, mint A600's selling for a fiver on ebay :eek but they're not as expandable as A1200's so I think I will go for the 1200 unless someone can convince me otherwise those AGA games are sure tempting... maybe I can sell one of my kidneys or something to pay for it Thanks again Akira! |

Get the A600 if you are short of money.
If you want the A1200 you must buy a hardrive and an accelerator board, if not, the 1200 is a useless machine compared to the A600. |

The A1200 won't run most cracked disk games (I've tried a lot and 60-70% don't work) Without WHDLoad I prefer my A600 (is so cute ) but if you can use WHDLoad the A1200 is the best option.
...or you can get both of them as Retroman says (That's the BEST option) Last edited by Uukrul; 30 July 2002 at 03:03. |

Most WHDLoad games will also work on an A600 with 2MB Chip Mem

Yes, I tested around 100 WHDLoad games on my A600 before the A1200 arrived and 85-90% worked OK

Yes, but WHDLoad games are hard to find (Spokyz!! :kill )
If I must choose between a plain A600 and a plain A1200 I get the A600 without thinking |

Even when I dont like JST, it still is a decent option, and TomTom has a nice load of WHD/JST games!
I liek swapping disks too But I hate having diskdrives dying on me |

Why would an a600 be preffered over a plain a1200?

- Cute
- Sweet - Small - So you can take it anywhere! - Runs WHD/JST games happily when expanded. - When not expanded, is a LOT more compatible than an A1200 - Did I say it's cute? Only disadvantage it has is the lack of an AGA chipset, and that you cant use the Preload function in lots of HD games because of teh lack of extra loads of RAM. Unless you are a nutter and load it with an Apollo A630. I would preffer a 2MB Chip A600HD to a plain A1200 with nothing. Read more reasons above. |

hmmm <thinks>
I'm really beginning to like the A600 now...A1200 seems a bit overkill for my needs & I suppose I can live without the AGA. The A600 is also more compatible and it's sooooo cute! Any cuter and I would have to paint it pink!
I saw this on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...tem=2041616987 what you guys think? It has everything I need plus a ram expansion! for £4! p.s. Akira, yes I am a meega-grrl! I hope my semi-feminist attitude didn't offend anyone :P |

By the way, ask about the memory expansion, because eblow it says its got only 1Mb (unelss hes talking just about teh A600 in general) you will have to add around 30 quid for a Chipmem expansion for the A600. it prolly will cost you more than the machine itself :P If the auction is for a 2MB A600, then I'd say it's worth a look. but dont expect it to go for 5 quid, tehre are 4 days left before auction closing! I'd say it'll close in around 40 quid. If it has that expansion, that is. And I dont think its a bad price, is it? |

w00t! EAB is back (I was a bit confuzzled by that semi-chatroom that was there in it's place )
I will look into that A600 and find out how much memory it has. Maybe I will go for it! (never used ebay before....scary!) |
