A600 HD Bootup

Hi.

I have been trying to perpare and format a 2.5" Hard disk in WinUAE and then use it in my A600. It worked out fine with one minor problem. I am using Win7 and latest WinUAE and I first clean the disk with diskpart so it is totally empty. Then I do the usual thing in WinUAE (select it in HardDrive dropdown, select UAE , ...) then do the usual HDToolBox stuff (including 1fe00 thingy), partition the disk using one or two partitions.

Up to here everything is OK. I format the partitions and copy stuff on them. Disk boots without any problems in WinUAE.

Whem I put this 2.5" disk into my A600 then it starts up and the HD light flashes like crazy for about 4 seconds, then it starts booting. It does this after EACH reset.
I tried this with THREE different 2.5" drives - some newer, some older and it is always the same. Bootup on A600 takes ages with flashing led.

THEN I tried to completely prep the HD on my A600 - I deleted all partitions and did all steps again there (from the beginning). After I did that I put the disk into PC and tried formating with WinUAE - format now took only a fraction of the second (it took about 5 seconds before). I copied everything over and put the disk back into my A600 - and now the bootup is normal - it does not flash the LED at all.

What could be the reason for this behavour ?

Did you use IDE emulation and at least WinUAE 2.5.1? ("Geometry" will be different if not) Did you use exact same KS, WB and HDToolbox version?

(It isn't UAE vs real Amiga comparison unless everything is exact same)

Hmm... nope. On winuae i used ks 3.1 and wb 3.1 tool box ... on my a600 i have 2.05 and appropriate wb. I used latest 2.5.1 - not sure what u mean with ide emulatiom? Only if I used UAE type it worked on uae . if i used SCSI then no device showed up in hdtoolbox (with scsi tooltype set).. so i guess that would be it.

It seems i got most things wrong. I will try again with settings as you recommend when i get home from holidays.

Thanx!

Then the question is: does same happen if you use identical config?

(Same ROM, hardware = A600)

Probably searching for other harddrives. I suppose the 2.5" hdd was not the only harddrive in WinUAE and it was not the last, either. So HDToolbox didn't set the "last unit" flag.

Put the drive into your Amiga, wait until it has booted, run HDToolbox. If the drive shows in the list as changed, save the changes.

Finally had some time to try all of this out. Sorry it took so long.

Anyway, Thomas - your hint didn't work - the drive does not show up as changed... if I change anything then I need to reformat and repartition - then it is OK, bootup normal.

I also tried latest WinUAE, same settings as real A600 - completely the same workbench and KS, everything... for some reason whatever I do I don't see the drive in HDToolBox if I have IDE selected (scsi device), only if I have UAE selected (uaehf device) I see the drive in the list. If I format it on WinUAE then I get the loooong bootup, as soon as I rescan, repartition the drive on A600 it is OK.

Correct ROM? (It _must_ be A600 KS ROM version) and chipset extra in chipset panel = A600?

Yes, its the A600HD KS rom the same as in my A600HD. The chipset extra in chipset panel is A600 ... the speed is ok and everything.

I did notice that the WinUAE A600 has a bit more memory than actual A600 has - EVEN though it has 50 buffers on the HD drive (for some reason I cannot change that with addbuffers in winuae but I can in real A600) and A600 has 30 buffers. Both have DF0, CC0 and HD0 drives in the boot menu... the A600 has some 30k less than winuae version.

Stuck 50 buffers = directory filesystem drive, buffers don't exist, they are only faked to make some utilities happy = less memory use.

This is a common problem. The CF-IDE adapter needs modifying to restore the HDD activity LED.

Edit: The details of the fix can be found in a thread here:
