How to make a kickstart 3.9 rom?

What equipment do I need?

What epproms do I need?

I understand the rom file has to be 512kb max but can I use bigger sized roms?

Do the 3.1 roms you can buy from Amigashop reprogrammable?

Any guides would be useful.

Thanks.

P.S. I hope this is the right forum for this and I hope I am not breaking any forum rules by asking this.

"What equipment do I need?"

An EEPROM burner =) Some buy Willem programmers because they are cheap as f**k, but remember that you need an adapter, more powerful PSU (most likely) and a x86 XP computer with a parallel port. I bought that and its a pain in the bum.
They are also ugly with no casing etc etc.
Willem burner: http://search.eim.ebay.se/?elc=-2&kw=PCB+willem&ect=
Adapter with ZIF: http://viewitem.eim.ebay.se/16-Bit-E...497082369/item
Cheaper adapter without ZIF: http://search.eim.ebay.se/?elc=-2&kw...it+42+dip&ect=

If I had not already spent money on it, I'd go with a Wellon VP-390 or 490 instead. I've heard good reviews on this.

You also need a UV eraser if you plan to reprogram the chips. I bought this piece of plastic. Works fine and has a timer. For the 27C400, I set the timer to 5 minutes, check in the Willem programmer that they are empty.

"What epproms do I need?"
Easiest is just to buy 27C400 with a speed of 120NS or faster. That is required for A1200 and A600. For bigbox amigas you can buy slower, but get the faster ones anyway and you dont have to worry about it.
I bought 150NS chips but they were actually 100NS, so do not trust the sellers description. When bought, talk to the seller and make sure you only get 120NS or faster.

"I understand the rom file has to be 512Kb max but can I use bigger sized roms?"
Yes. The EEPROM size can be bigger. The 27C400 is 512kb. You can use 27C800 as well if you need 1Mb (for multiple roms in a single chip, or a 1mb kickstart in amigas with one slot only (A600 for example).
The Amiga 1200 and 600 can use 1Mb rom (File, not actual EEPROM size) sizes. The amiga 4000 (and 3000?) can only use 512Kb unless you buy separate hardware for them to allow for a 1Mb rom. More on that in the excellent guide below.

"Do the 3.1 roms you can buy from Amigashop reprogrammable?"
Nope. Onetime.

For a guide, theres only one person to talk to. Mfilos!

Thanks Turran.

Is UV light the only way to erase an epprom?

Those two Eeproms cost the best part of £200. I haven't got that kind of money.

Or leave it in the sun for 2 years or so =) There are eeproms that are erased digitally via the EEPROM burner, but that is beyond my knowledge.

If you do go to Willem route for a cheaper burner, remember the adapter you need as well. Also pick up a new PSU (12v, 1000MA) as the USB is not always enough to power it. I might be wrong on that point.

Also remember that you need a x86 computer with a parallel port. There are newer willem programmers (TRUE USB) that does not use the parallel port, but they cost more.

I'm sure someone has tested other EEPROM programmers and can give their view.

EPROMs are annoying ancient technology

IMHO it is better to wait for incircuit programmable flash rom adapters, for example this one: http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=66815

Oh hey.. I found the adapter with ZIF socket. Only 4 times the price of one without. heh.

Edit: Updated first post with ebay links.

Thanks for your help Turran. Looks like I need the best part of £70 to do the job. Will have to wait a bit until pay day.

The chips are already erased according to the ebay description so don't need the uv light box.

Both adapters will work with that one, yes.

You can not always trust the supplier that the chips are empty. Plus, you'll mostly likely fail your first few burns (wrong dip settings, USB power not enough etc etc). I can only recommend you get the UV eraser as well.

Is it possible to add files like IDEfix to the rom or not?

You can add another scsi.device, for example v 43.45. Then you have access to bigger harddrives with a filesystem like PFS3 (PFS3-AIO).

I do not know if the new scsi.devices work with 4 units though, like idefix does. Perhaps someone can better inform on that.
