Misc questions
First of all, I'd like to thank the CAPs team for all their hard work in preserving Amiga history. Your work will be appreciated by historians in the future when there are no longer any physically working Amiga disks. Great job!
Just a few questions. How many commercial games were released for the Amiga? And what are you guys planning to do with all the disks you've collected since you will have the biggest most complete Amiga games library ever. |

I estimate that there are around 5,000 commercial Amiga games worldwide (but the number always seems to keep getting higher!).
Of course, it's debatable what is a commercial game... |

Like Cody says, there are quite a few, but I may think that technically a commercial title can be considered any game/app etc., that the author and/or publisher has made money on from sales of said software. Even if it was a meager amount to the most amount ever for a software title
I could go on an on but I think that says it all. |

If you include any game which has made the author/publisher money, then you are also including shareware, which means that the total rises to about 10,000 (or 15,000? 20,000? Who knows!).
That doesn't include applications - anyway, CAPS only deals with games. |

However, we do have a very large collection, and it will certainly stick around until it is completely preserved. After that, who knows? Some of the people in CAPS are collectors, and so certainly they will stay in our possession for a looong time, of those that are duplicates, maybe we can swap them for as-yet missing games, or give them away in competitions. It would certainly be a good idea to keep at least one copy, for obvious reasons. Maybe we can start an Amiga museum. Anything is possible. But we haven't discussed this aspect. So I really don't know. Once day all the disks will be dead (unless we re-master them of course) and so most peoples collections will be useless apart from boxes/manuals. This is a realist rather than a pessimist view, but it probably won't happen for far longer than the media-life quotes say... |

For instance, Quake and other early ID games were sold as 'episodes' via shareware. Wouldn't anyone preserving the PC gaming include Doom, Duke Nukem, or Quake? Nevertheless, that's besides the point. Perhaps the word you're really looking is: Retail. Quote:
What you mean= Retail Shareware= Commercial Public Domain= Not commercial Quote:
Interestingly enough, if anyone still needs a point for digital preservation, the source code i had went dead with the floppy |

Would you even say we in HOL are wrong when we call licences 'commercial' for games by Psygnosis, Epyx etc.? (You might be correct, nonetheless. That's why we discuss here, isn't it.) |
