Max's BBS Pro

Hi folks

It's been nearly 20 years since I first started working on Max's Pro, so I'd like to hear any thoughts, memories, or any questions you may have about it.

Would also love to hear from anyone who used Kewl Doors, or called Redrum BBS also!

Looking forward to your replies..

Niki

Hi Niki, very nice to see you here!

Me and my friend Beerface were the only registered users in Sweden (what I'm aware of). I remember that day i called Redrum asking for my copy, but you was not available for chat, so you were kind to call back later to my BBS and upload the software

I do remember the Kewl doors too and your unfinished replacement mailer door. But the main reason i wanted to upgrade to PRO was for file_id.diz and byteratio support

For some months ago i played a game called [ Show youtube player ]. Filename says it is made by Niki Murkett. I guess you did that game?

hmm

I used to config and run Maxs BBS software and used to have locals phone into the board. I tried in vein many times to get it to work through the internet years later but to no avail...

Did the Pro Version address this issue?

If you plan to release an AmigaOS4.x version I might consider setting up a BBS for the family since we all live all over the world... and run it on one of my 4 spare SAMs LOL

Max's 1.54 and PRO have same issue whit telnet connection
main bug are Telnet and Sernet.device
it's take me a 12 year to make it to connect internet
and i burn my brains so many times to doing so

PRO not work right if you try to start it icon mode
some features are not working if icon mode is used directly on start up
you get file not found errors and user kick out
if you open screen some point after that all work okey
( this takes me a moths to figure out WTF is going on )

Telneting:
if you don't use AmiTCP to connect your MAX's to net
you only need AmiTCP directory and assing
to make Telnet devices working

i am happy to help if some one have problem to setup MAX's !

Telnet was never a good alternative to dial-up modems.

Saying that though, for the best telnet experience, I found using telnetd.device and limiting the baud rate to 19,200 worked quite well.

You'll need to run NSA Patch on any AMOS doors to make them run on multi-node/telnet setups.

That's really cool! Had my Max's BBS up for some years ago. But put it down because i only got about 1 connection in a week or so. So was not worth having the Amiga up 24h/day.

I connected to your BBS, using the Putty telnet client in Windows. The ANSI displayed wrong. So have not registered yet. Have tried to change font, but it does not make it look any better.

Will have another go to the weekend. I have DCTelnet on the Amiga. So hopefully that will work better

.:Niki Murkett:.

yep File transfer problem piss me off big time
you can knock BBS down just use wrong Term or transfer some files whit wrong protocol setup
there is some mystery whit TelnetD and Telser.devices both limit speed 19.200
file transfer this limit is not valid it run fast as it can
only one Amiga software can set them run more terminal speed... ?!?
why i don't know

NSA... hmm sound sounds suspicious...
thanks...

.:Hipoonios:.

heh that why i have 6x Amiga2000 if one burn i have more xD
and they are cheap to buy and easy to fix
but i have dream of BBS Farm and that run by Rasperys...
(old BBS backups bring them online again)

Ansi... ah yes
old days we have only IBM / Topaz fonts
Term software now use tons of different fonts and no one is like IBM Ansi standard >
you have to setup your term use right font...
i found that Synkterm is the easiest to set up old school BBS
and you don't need install nothing on your PC just execute synkterm

Amiga DCtelnet work well to my system
DCtelnet have problems for Uploads and can crash system
but work 100% on menus and games...

i have only able setup 2 Amiga term to work 99% on file transfer
"jr-comm" work well if you set up overdrive mode
"Term" work but don't remember what i have to do whit that

Yes. The pro version could use telnet. You'll need to read the trapdoor configuration page in the instructions for the parameters.

I have no plans to work with OS4.x, however, I may release a new version on linux at some point.

hey is there noway to stop MAXS do this forum cleanse ?
when it try to delete old messages
or use some "virtual" memory ex. HD directory

and how it work when you have more then one node
if i look right all 5 nodes dry to do this at same time ?!?
yes i use one config file for them all

whether it is possible to provide, for example, Zmodem instructions
ex. make buffer size adjust or command just take binary connection...

OMG! Hello Niki and everyone else.. still alive? It's Marty from Australia (Gremlins BBS). I was bored and did a random search on Amiga BBS's and came across this forum among other historical websites, BBS doors, etc.. such a loooooooooong time ago! I've spoken to the odd SysOp in the past over the years, and yes, many memories and fun times!

I remember frequenting a Max's BBS board in Sydney, Australia back in the early 90's. It was one of my favourites. It was actually called M A X's BBS.

I definitely remember being under the impression that the board was run by the author of the Max's BBS software, is that not the case?

I recall a co-sysop of the board named Ed (full name withheld), who granted me greater access. He went on to write (with another guy) some useful Amiga software too.

I still have my old 2400 baud Avtek Megamodem 24 from those days. It's one of the few pieces of hardware from that time I've kept.

I used to talk to anthony barret ( MAX ) sysop and edward lawford (co-sysop) all the time ...

MAX was Anthony barrett

maxs bbs software was for sale to people wanting to start up a bbs ... and eventually it went public domain when tony moved onto other stuff.

Just found this thread too, whilst searching for advice on getting Max's BBS working on NG systems! Fantastic to see both Niki Murkett and Marty here!

I used to run a BBS called Binary Refinery (and later, Amibug) on Max's 1.54 (my handle was JOlt). They were the single most fun times I have ever had in computing. I called Redrum on numerous occassions and was always blown away by the quality of the ANSIs.

Marty! I am sorry to say but I had forgotten about you. But you actually called my BBS from Australia and we chatted once or twice. I was always impressed by your output to the Max's community. You were an inspiration! And a very friendly and amusing figure too.

Back to why I was searching for this in the first place though: it's my dream to get a dial-up Max's BBS back online, with telnet as a possible nice-to-have but not a priority (something of the magic is lost I feel through telnet). In addition, dial-up makes sense to me as long distance calls are free now (in the UK at least). Let's have an Amiga (and especially Max's) BBS revival!

Do you still have your BBS on a dusty hard drive somewhere Marty? Might we see Gremlins back online in 2016?
