I'm using a SanDisk CF PCMCIA adaptor. However, the only card I got to work with it is an Integral 1 GB. Neither a Kingston 1 GB nor an Extrememory 4 GB work though. Any special reason why this is?

Thanks in advance,

Lenny

The newer cards are ATAPI (like CD-ROM) rather than ATA (IDE).

Why?

Because ATA doesn't support removable media.

I think that the CFD driver could be fixed to work with these cards.

SanDisk cards (at least older ones) can be forced to FIXED instead of REMOVABLE using a DOS command line tool ATCFWCHG.COM

I'm looking for NDCFWCHG.COM. Does anyone have it and would they be so nice as to share it with me? I got hold of ATCFWCHG.COM, but it doesn't work with my card.

Thanks in advance,

Lenny

Anyone had any luck using larger 8 gb + CF cards via the PCMCIA slot?

Thinking of getting an 8 gig Sandisk Ultra II for mod and music storage.

The 4 gig one works great, but would like atleast 8 gigs. 16 would be even better.

compactflash.device supports TD64 commands, so I think it should work. Sandisk is an excellent option.

I never found it, but I doubt it would work. From what I have read there is a date code on the side of the cards, for NDCFWCHG.COM to work they need to be older than year 2003, month 1. The code is "AR+YYMM", so 2003, month 1 is "AR0301".

ATCFWCHG.COM is a newer utility for use with "Athens" controller based cards.

AFAIK SanDisk has moved to a newer controller which currently has no software to change to fixed.

Your right, 8 gig card works fine. Formatted it via my PC to Fat32, and the Amiga had no troubles with it.

Got it loaded with a mountain of Mod music.

I just bought a Transcend 8GB.... and

It wont work

I tried Fat and Fat32, as well with only a 1 gig partition....

Is there anything else I could do before i throw it in the bin?

OH, btw, sometimes when I remove the CF from the PCMCIA adapter, it gives me the following error, in German! (WTF)

DISK " "
Zu Fruh Entnommen!
wiederholen / abrechen

Hi everblue,

There is some discussion about this error message in this thread:

An update:

Ok - I tried some stuff:

PREPCARD: This detects the CF (including its name!), but when I select FORMAT, it says something along the lines of "Disk is write protected".

FORMAT: Both CC0: and CF0: are listed but the sizes are weird, like 20k and 0k.

Side note: I have IDEFIX installed.

Any ideas what I could do to get my CF working?

Cheers

E'Blue

You are not supposed to use PREPCARD.
You have to format your card on the PC using FAT16 or FAT32

Perhaps your 8GB card is just not compatible anyway.
I['d use a 4GB Transcend @ 133Mhz.

Perhaps there is overflow in filesystem handler or device driver causing >=8G cards to fail.

It can't be "usual" incompatibility (card not detected) if prepcard shows name of the card.

I was reading someone did use a 32GB flash cart without problems.

I have IDE-FIX installed - maybe it has issues?

OS version? I am quite sure OS 3.5+ (perhaps 3.9) is needed if you want correctly reported free space, format command that supports >4G etc..

I am using OS 3.1. But none of the partitions I created (using the PC) are larger than 4gb.

There's a new version of compactflash.device available on Aminet. It apparently fixes some issues with Kingston cards (possibly others).
