HD files with just WinUAE

Can I use HD files with just WinUAE. Or do I have to install something like Amiga forever.

Or another thought, if I attach an external HD to my PC, I have a spare 40GB drive, can I use this as an amiga drive for use with WinUAE?? If So is there a tutorial to help me do this, I know I am being a pain so thanks for any help you guys may be able to give me...

Yes and yes.

You can use spare 40 Gig drive as Amiga only drive, but I don't see the point in doing so.

You can create as many HDF's and it's easy to back them up. (just zip HDFs )

For instructions, just search forum.

Ok... games come in floppies. ADF, IPF, etc.

In Hardrive, you'll have to have WHDLoad. It's an app that runs diskimages from the HD. You can make the images out of your originals, or get them from the web.

You'll have to have Workbench installed and run it from there, double clicking the game you want to play.

Ok, this is an awfully simplistic explanation, but anyway... here's the WHDLoad page... and here's a couple of WHDLoad installed games... if you install workbench such as Classic Workbench, it already brings WHDLoad installed, it's as simple as extracting WHDLoad games and running them by double clicking.

Here's an old tutorial, but it mentions most of this.

And Ultron has forgot to mention KG's WHDLoad packs!

There you'll find all games as at WHDownload's and a bit more. (big thanks goes to Killer Gorilla for making both of those possible )

Sorry sir

Making an hdf from a whdload game isn't too hard, it's just if you want LOTS of games when it becomes a problem.

If you do go the hdf route I'd recommend having 2 hdfs, one with a simple startup-sequence, whdload, the kickstart images, etc. and one with the game itself.

This way you can update whdload by overwriting the one copy of it on your first hdf. Whereas if you have one hdf solely for each game you'll have to update whdload for every single game.

I hope that makes some sense!

What I did was make a 20gig hdf for games, demos etc and i think it was a little 400meg hdf for the OS and any other utils I want to install, that way you can have every single whdload game on one hdf and just change the settings once a game is loaded to slow it down. I dont really understand the need for a new HDF per game tbh. I just zipped the HDF file up and stuck it away in case I get an error or something on the HDF.

I personally wouldn't go to all the effort of making individual hdfs for use in WinUAE as I don't enjoy playing games on my PC.

I did create some hdfs of my absolute fave games for WinUAEX though as it boot straight into each game from the emulators gamelist without the need for loading Workbench.
