Monkey Island 1 - improve graphics from PC version?

I am sure this has come up before, and I have had a search on the site this morning but couldn't find anything so thought I would ask...

Money Island 1
  • Would taking the VGA background graphics from the PC
  • Down grading them to 32(?) colour / dither
  • and inserting them back into the original Amiga version be possible?

Guess it would need the SCUMM engine updating somehow and making sure the palette maintain backwards so actors and the GUI don't get messed up.

I'm aware of SCUMMVM but it looks to be a big of a hog and I'd like to see this on an A500 (expanded for sure + HD).

You could go up to 64. I suspect that with quite a bit of work you could even go HAM.

Which is both not supported by even the last version of SCUMM they did for the Amiga. And good luck scrolling HAM graphics.

The Amiga version uses 32 colors already and hence looks better than the EGA PC version from the same year. The VGA version was done later and of course looks even better. But it's unlikely you could beat the 32-color graphics originally done for the Amiga with downgraded graphics from the VGA version.

I remember that a tool from LucasArt was made available and was made specifically to port 256 colors vga graphics to 32 colors for Amiga.
May even have been discussed on EAB.

The Amiga version was released in mid 1991 while the EGA PC original was released in October 1990. Not surprising given that the Amiga graphics were converted from the VGA graphics.
