Is anyone else holding onto their A500 until it increases in value a lot?

Sorry if the thread title's a bit weird.

After owning my A500 for approx 16 years and knowing how much it originally cost straight out of the factory, I find it hard to accept that it's currently only worth up to £50 including delivery on eBay.

For this reason, I'm planning to hold on to my A500 (obviously assuming it's still working OK) until it's worth around its original straight out of factory price (I know I could be waiting a long time - although, I have recently bought the original box for it ). I only paid £50 for my A500 in 1995(?).

I just feel the history of the computer, fact it's up to 24 years old and how much you can do on it compared to say a little 128k Spectrum is worth so much more than the £50.

Do any other A500 owners feel like this?

P.S. I know the A500+ currently fetches more than the A500 on average due to it being a bit rarer.

Are you waiting for the original price adjusted for inflation? If so you better get a big casket to burry it with you and have a distant reletive dig it up when the price is right.

Well, move to Brazil. An A500 is usually sold here for around R$600,00, which is something around 270 Euros. And this is not including delivery.

I would love to have an Amiga again, and I would gladly pay £50 for it (This would be something around R$125), but R$600 it's too much IMO.

I have seen prices for 500's be anywhere between £20-£100. Depending on condition and how cheeky the seller feels. Also depending on what goodies are thrown in with it. So £50 is pretty much on the nose for sale prices. I wouldn't expect them to increase in price as drastically as you are hoping for.

However saying that I have noticed since CUSA have started selling their replica 64x that the prices for real C64's have fluctuated. So maybe if the 500x does appear then it's possible that real 500's will increase their value. But again I can't see it getting to the amount your hoping for.

Unless it is boxed and in mint condition without having yellowed you'll never get £50. More likely £20

The reason is plain and simple. Supply and demand. There were millions of A500's sold in the UK and there is only a demand of hundreds these days. Hence the low price.

128K Sinclair Spectrums are worth more because they didn't make very many. Whereas the 48k, 48k+, +2/+2a are very common and worth far less.

In my opinion the only reason to keep one or more Amiga computers at home is if you want to use them. It's just a computer, not a stamp collection.

In this case my suggestion would be to get rid of it now to someone that would like it for a purpose. As already pointed out the price isn't going to skyrocket anytime soon for the "investors" out there.

If you want to invest into something, sell the A500. Buy the right Star Wars merchandising figures. These were even mentioned in some serious manager magazine as being more stable than most of the shares you could invest into.

In that case ensure the barrell battery is removed from your 512kB ram expansion or 500+ then... otherwise you will be covered in white fluff and green goo.

Failing to do this means your body will need to be dug up every 20 years and soaked in lemon juice.

If it has never been opened and the box is like new maybe you could get something for it, otherwise I think the price will pretty much stay where it is.

Mine's actually got a coin battery and I replaced it a couple of weeks ago with a new Duracell one from Amazon.

Did a little googling (out of curiosity) and apparently there are no official figures for various reasons.

I think A500's sell for $60 or so on ebay here, thats something like 40 Euro give or take. Mine was cheaper in the early 2000's before people started collecting them.

Europe probably had more A500's sold then in the US, most people here had C64's and then either a Mac or a PC.

An A500 isn't really worth much money. Yes, on eBay they want 30-50€. But check retro-forums, fleamarket, small-ads. Normally you can get it for 15-20€, without yellowing. Of course it's easier to get these prices in Europe, compared to the USA/Brazil where aren't sold millions of them.

It is very odd that there are no official numbers of Amigas produced and sold.
But I guess that's just one more sign of sloppy work in Commodore.
What does worry me though, is a surprisingly low number of "stronger" Amigas (1200, 3000, 4000). Makes me panic

Meh, if I'm a little patient I can go collect an A500 + kit for free if I would want one; not many people that even attempt to charge money for it here in the NL. A fully equipped A1200 or A4000 usually goes for about a hundred euros from what I've seen.

A500's are cheap at the moment. I got 5 that i got of ebay, before i realised that an A1200 is a lot more flexible etc.

A1200's fecth a lot more, especially in places like Aus,

ANd A3000's and A4000's can fetch a lot of $$$. I would love to buy an A4000, but the price is hard to justify (though i've nearly spent as much on the A1200's lol)
