What Greaseweazle model do you have? What floppy drive do you have and what cable are you using (straight or PC crossover?) Describe your setup, or even better, show some pictures of it.

Are you using known good disks? Are they DD or HD disks. If HD disks, are you covering the HD hole?

I have the V4,

the Drives i tried are ...

NEC - FD1231T
Samsung - SFD-321B

Its using a crossover ribbon cable, power cable and USB cable that were supplied with the Greaseweazle from AMIGAKIT

used HD and DD disks covering holes and not covering holes.

Tried with Maxell, TDK, Sony, Imation and unbranded disks

Trying to format disk in WinUAE also fails when verifying

GW Info :-

Host Tools: v0.39
Device:
Port: COM4
Model: Greaseweazle V4
Firmware: v1.1
Serial: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
USB Rate: Full Speed (12 Mbit/s)

Are you able to do a 'read' of a disk and save it as ADF (if AmigaDOS format) or as SCP?

Forget about WinUAE for now - you need to make sure you are able to read and write using the Greaseweazle software.

Would a normal (staright) floppy cable work with Greaseweazle or is twisted kind a must?

Sure, you just need to match the drive select to your setup.

If you have a normal PC drive, they're often locked to ds1 and are intended to be used with a twisted cable. If you use a straight cable, the drive won't answer to select 0 or drive a.

Yes, a straight cable will work - but you probably need to set the drive select to B (for a standard PC floppy drive).

OK, if you can dump a disk OK, then a few things to check:

1. Check that you have the write enable jumper connected on the GW v4 board. Maybe it is not writing, so the verification read back is not working.

2. If you use a HD disk, make sure you cover the HD hole, for reading and writing.

3. Write the image to disk as an SCP (with no verification) and read it back as SCP, and view in HxC Floppy Emulator Software.

4. Make sure you are using known good floppy disks. Inspect for mould/damage and clean if required. Use a strong neodymium magnet to wipe the disk - this sometimes help with any magnetic based issues.

Thank you, but I don't quite understand. Does that mean the same as this:

How would I do that? I have a Greaseweazle incoming, and I have a straight floppy cable here, and a Sony drive. So I'm planning in advance

The default for drive select should be "A", so this does not really make any sense.

I have exactly the same issue as OP.

I have the greaseweazel V4, bought the twist cable from amigakit and can read amiga disks and play on winuae.

I cannot write to disks either and get the same error.

Writing c=0-79:h=0-1
Format ibm.1440
T0.0: Writing Track (Flux: 200.0ms period, 220.0 ms total, Terminate at index)
T0.0: Writing Track (Verify Failure: Retry #1)
T0.0: Writing Track (Verify Failure: Retry #2)
T0.0: Writing Track (Verify Failure: Retry #3)
** FATAL ERROR:
Failed to verify Track 0.0

Is there anything I can try please? I'm desperate to play lemmings on floppy

This happened to me today!

Formatted first, then tried to rewrite a couple of original disks that weren't working anymore... after formatting one of them, every single write operation, even on known working floppies, failed miserably.

I had to clean the floppy heads to restore full functionality.

So I suspect the original, non working disks had mold issues (and I'll just keep them stored without inserting into any drive, it's not worth the hassle I think)

try: gw write --format amiga.amigados lemmings.adf

If you're using hd disks, tape over the hd detect hole.

Thank you for your reply. I have tried your suggestion. Something is wrong, my guess is the floppy (is that possible that it can read fine everytime but not write?).

Either the floppy I have is a dud (I doubt) or all my floppies are not in shape. It is possible as I am using old disks and formatting them in Workbench.

The disks are not HD just DD

Did it at least accept the correct format this time? In your previous log snippet it was thinking it was writing a PC HD floppy.
