a3660 full 060, a3000

A lucky friend of mine over Christmas received a full 060 CPU with CPU/MMU for his A3000.

He swapped out the LC060 and installed the full 060 on the card, it boots fine but will not show the FPU.

I googled it and it says that a custom kickstart is required to enable the FPU.

He has 3.1.4 from Hyperion Entertainment. How can he get his FPU working? I have the ability to burn EPROMs for him (I burned our 3.1.4 ROMs).

Thanks everyone.

J

PS: I ordered an a3660 a while back but it has not arrived.

3.1.4 does not need a custom ROM to use or enable the FPU, that's only needed for older ROMs.

Have you installed all the 060 and mmu libraries?

Hi quantum8,

Thanks for the message.

We just installed the latest 40.37 68060.library to libs: and bingo bango sysinfo now shows a 68060+68882 FPU! We tried ADPRO, loaded a JPG and it worked (requires FPU).

We didn't change my MMU libraries. Do we need to add/update new ones?

Doesn't hurt to use the latest ones, but probably won't be noticeable if you already have it and the system is stable.

The custom kickstart actually disables the FPU so that it doesn't crash the Amiga when booting.

The 68060 library then enables it again. No MMU libs are strictly mandatory, but a 68060.library is definitely needed in order to have a fully functional 68060 Amiga. There is a wide variety available, but the ones in the mmu libs package are generic, and something you can use as a starting point.

It's all working as it should now. We didn't add any MMU libraries but we did replace the 68060.library with the latest that requires an MMU and FPU, and all is good. Tested the FPU and oh my, it certainly is fast.

Anyhoo, thanks to all that posted. Glad to know that KS/WB 3.1.4 did not require a special kickstart rom patch. It only required a library.

Good to hear that you got it working. Yes, 3.1.4 is the first release of the OS that will boot an 060 without the help of the CPU card's ROM.
