What's a good USB game pad for WinUAE?

I'm trying to find a good game/joy pad for Amiga games, because trying to play certain Amiga games with the keys taken over for game controls is awkward, so I'd rather free the keyboard for that purpose.

I did have a Buffalo joypad years back, but I crazily sold the thing, and now the price has risen. Should I still go for it, or are there other options out there for game controllers for USB?

If you like the SNES pad style the iBuffalo is great (and not too expensive). Pretty close to the original. I use a 8bitdo.com bluetooth pad (SFC30) but that one costs a bit more though, especially with the Retro Receiver.

Just buy a XBox 360 controller. Pretty much all modern games support or even need it so you don't have to buy something jsut for WinUAE.

For me I've found the old Microsoft Sidewinder USB pad is still one of the best for WinUAE. I have an Xbox One pad as well but the Sidewinder is still superior for emulators. Try pick one up from eBay. I have two or three of them.

Not enough buttons though surely Steve; if you were playing a CD32 game where's the "Pause / Play", "Foward" and "Back" assigned to?

I can't image why anyone would suggest a Xbox 360 pad. The d-pad is not really good and the analogsticks are for 3D games. It's hard to get a good joypad with a decent d-pad these days, which you really need for 2D games.

IBuffalo and the 8bitdo pad are probably the best you can get at the moment. Or get an USB adapter for a Sega Mega Drive 6-button/Sega Saturn (Japan/PAL-2 model) original pads.

I am not a big game pad guy, but I do like the IBuffalo the best when it comes to game pads. I usually end up using my Xbox One controller though because that is almost always connected to my PC for the modern games and I actually like using the thumbstick even though it is technically a no-no to use an analog stick. But my favorite way to rock winUAE is with a 9 pin to usb adapter and use my old school Wico sticks.

It does have the two shoulder buttons so really it is perfect for CD32 games. The lack of a pause/play button isn't such a big deal for me. It's an excellent joypad.

I choose out of these 3.

Xbox 360 Pad
PS3 Hori Arcade stick (Bluetooth)
Dreamcast Original Ball Top Arcade Stick via a DC to USB converter.

I cant play Amiga games with a dpad. Try Sensible Soccer on dpad its terrible. I need a stick..

Analogue - I generally use the xbox 360 pad for general play.

None of these, you need a joystick not a gamepad.
Gamepads:for consoles where you use a button for jump.

In WinUAE it doesn't matter. You can map the JoyUp direction to a game pad button. Also a lot of classics get WHDLoad CD32 pad patches with a jump button. So no, a stick isn't mandatory these days. But i still use one for games like SWOS or the Epyx Games series. There you really need a stick.

There are a ton of games that support this and also WHDLoad patches that ad this functionality.

I've used a Sega 6 button joypad with an Amiga since 1993 and I never looked back, my joysticks all went to gather dust from that point on. I have some good joysticks here, but I rarely use them nowadays.

It's a lot more precise, and less strain on your hand (as long as you have a heavenly pad like the Sega 6 button pad).
