7zip is one crunching mf
As well as the improvements listed in the the news thread, the next releases are going to see each downloadable package reduced by about 6MB in size! For instance, the ClassicWB full will be down to 11.8MB. Rck will be happy me thinks, after all every little bit helps.
By providing a "System.HDF" file instead of a "System.ZIP", the archiver 7zip can make massive reductions in size. The packages will be in sfx format so users won't require 7zip installed. This means the instructions and real amiga install method have had to be changed, but for the better. The user now enables the workbench in a very similar manner to AIAB - mounting the HDF in an emulator and running it, simple as that. During the install procedure the user also has the option of adding the copper background (or not) - no more separate packages. In order to install on real Amiga's, the user creates the System.zip themselves (instructions provided) from the now competed workbench and can install with the help of an adf image provided. |
