Continues and Posting Scores
With most games, a continue will either reset the score to zero, or it will not reset the score at all - both of these are not allowed in the compo. But with this game, it remembers the score from the previous checkpoint, takes you back there, and restores the score to whatever it was. This seems fair enough, but using a continue should still carry some kind of weight, so there is a 50K penalty for using them. I hope players will remember how many continues they used, and remove those from the score as appropriate. You dont need to show any calculations, I'll double check a few if needs be.

Hopefully the game can be paused, so players can grab a screen shot at any point they like. For example, if you make it to level 3 and get stopped by the police, perhaps remap Pause to a button, so you can screenshot your score. I have no issue with players taking a screenshot of their score at any point, as long as they are being honest about the continues. The best way to save your score is to record your play, and then we can use your final score.

I'm aware that if players used continues on level 2, and posted a score, it might be a minus score. That's why it is suggested in the rules to take screenshots at the start of each new level. However, the player could reach level 3 using 1 continue, and have a score less than their level 2 score. So this is where not using continues is important. I'd encourage players to use up continues to practice level 2, and then there is less of a risk of using them. If the continues are an issue, maybe it can be discussed over this first week?

If people are getting stuck, I included a link to my playguide in the first post. I used one continue.

Is that 21,103?

If you didn't use any continues then it's basically your score?

I've updated the rules for newbies. 5K for each continue used.

If you didn't use any continues then you dont need to add or take away anything from the score.

Reached fourth level (picture from start of level) and didn't use continues.
Was this submitted correctly? My end score in the end was 197,687.

Video of that effort should be visible after awhile here:

I posted it before the rules were changed and I misinterpreted some of them :-)

You are correct.

I probably could have kept going on this run, but hadn't seen the updated rules so haven't been using continues. I completed it yesterday but used a couple of continues so didn't save the score . Hopefully I can do it again soon.

Replay is available streamed from AmigaLive if required.

Oh I did find that completed run. Score is as per screenshot because remaining resources (10) and continues used (1 during stage 5, 1 during stage 6) cancel each other out.

Video can be seen for the next couple of weeks at https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2065793365
Timestamp is [34:51:00 - 35:22:00]

I must have been a bit fortunate.

Used one continue on the second level. Picture is from the start of sixth level.
So eventually I couldn't complete sixth level, really should leave some more turbos there.

Video of that effort should be soon visible:

Nice to see our first game complete of this round. You also get a star for beating the whole game.

Yes those items cancel out the continues. I expected this might happen but it's fair enough, especially considering shooting the police helicopters gives 2K bonus points. So may as well use them all up.

Just a note about the music.

The introduction music holds special memories for me. It has the bass, lead guitar and drums on the right channel, and two other instruments on the left, with the high hats fading between the two channels. Having six instruments playing at once might not sound too impressive these days, but it impressed me, given there are normally no more than 4 instruments playing at any one time.

I notice most players are using SFX. The game defaults to SFX but you can press F1 on the title screen for the music. Which I think is well worth it.

Just wondering, did I misunderstood scoring?
I calculated my score this way:
Picture at the start of last level reached (minus continues used by then), which resulted 242856 points (247856 - 1xcontinue).

Should I take instead picture of the moment game ends (minus all the used continues)? That would have given 277685 points (292685 - 3xcontinues)

Yes and Yes.

If you take a screenshot at the start of the level, its your score, minus any continues.
If you want to be more accurate and try to take a screenshot at game over point, its the score, minus any continues.

If you want to submit the biggest and best score you made without feeling in danger of losing it, perhaps record it, and then post a screen grab from the end of your recording. You dont have to post videos to prove your scores. Scores are based on the picture you posted, not the videos, as videos (especially on twitch) tend to disappear!

Wow, well done so far on the scores all!

I haven't even tackled the game yet, so it will be a new one for me!

Thanks for confirming I'm usually uploading videos to youtube, but just for evidence of my scores for lvlupscore.com. I'll grab the end picture of my effort and post that score instead.

Happy with this run, despite using a continue, so I'm probably done now. Score is 401,601 -5,000 +6,000.

I used some of the scoring tips from lifeschool and I think it will be tough to beat unless someone uses no continues.

Video is at https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2069876666 timestamp [26:57:00 - 27:24:00]

After a while it becomes less frustrating and there are some strategies to use in most situations. I found the toughest parts to be the last checkpoint of the 3rd level, some parts of level 4, and the second checkpoint of level 6.

Overall a neat game, it plays well, has nice gfx/sfx and doesn't overstay it's welcome.
