As a way of saying thanks to the guys over at a1k.org (Luzypher and AMike I think, from reading around) I have posted our perfected de-yellowing method over at A1k.org. It seems only fitting seeing as they started the ball rolling on this.

Ultra-sad chemistry nerd that I am, I looked up the flame retardants in The Plastics Handbook at work (yes, I really was that bored!).

The main ones used in thermoplastics are polybrominated diphenyl ethers (our prime suspect for the yellowing) and antimony trioxide. Bromine compounds are yellow-brown, does that sound familiar....??

I just thought you may be interested....

*ahem*

Using bleach is a bad idea, it's hypochlorite, not peroxide. It might cause worse yellowing in time. Chlorine is a halogen, the same periodic table group as bromine and will scavenge oxygen causing yellowing.

I reckon the "Oxy" made peroxide all of it's own in solution, the product also contains perborates which can react with TAED to make peroxides in solution.

Also, you risk the "Oxy" reacting with the bleach releasing chlorine gas, not good....

I would get some hydrogen peroxide solution from your local hairdressing supplies, somewhere like "Sally" in the UK. Add no more that 5 grammes per litre of "Oxy" as it may foam up a lot.

I tested the bleach+TAED solution on a rubber ball of an old Amiga mouse full of not-funny brown marks.

Guess? Works too!

The apparently new one was the worst of the group.

Here is it with two other "next victims" of the process:

Eheh, they are inside the respective mice. Not funny things made with them.

BTW: not peroxide. I had try the bleach + oxy treatment.

Here's some independent proof that the process works, this is a before and after picture of some keys and case parts from an Osborne 1 computer being cleaned on the Vintage Computer Forums. These were treated in Arizona sunshine for six hours with 30% peroxide and 1/8 teaspoonful per gallon of Oxy.

Certainly, I think we've had enough trials on various boards now to be able to draw up a "Cleaning Computer Cases for Dummies" guide.

I'll put one together over the weekend.

No it isn't. It's some untreated and treated parts. Not quite the same

OK Alexh, maybe not quite the same, but you have to admit, that is being a tad pedantic...is cleaning not a form of restoring something to it's original condition?
