Up until about a year ago, the reasons for this were not explained. The man who finally got the answer was Tommi Lempinen, who has pulled me aside at Revision 2011 and Revision 2012 for some multiple-hour talks about possible reasons. After he explained all his findings, I was confinced that it's a memory timing failure, which Tommi has proven with measurements that he showed me at Revision 2013. These measurements show that the address hold time for the RAS cycle is violated on some VIC-II chips. I guess we both deserve credit for explaining the bug, but Tommi has actually proven it. I only pushed him into the right direction. Urban legend for almost two decades was that the VSP bug is caused by missed refresh cycles. Tommi has proven that it's an address hold time bug. Quote:

Besides, HDMI only accepts 50 and 60Hz in very specific resolutions that need to be generated by scaling first. You don't get around the FPGA, even if you're only talking colour space conversion (HDMI wants to see RGB, but the VIC-II generates YUV, where UV is combined in the chroma signal). Another problem is that the signals already come out of the chip in analogue format, so you need to convert them to digital before you can do anything with them. In essence, you'd be adding a product that would be better-suited as a stand-alone product, so it can also be used with other Commodore computers. Quote:

@Schoenfeld
Good to hear that the video quality is getting some attention. All the interference has certainly been my main annoyance with the otherwise quite nice s-video output. You said that adding new features such as a SD card reader is not a goal here. However, if the layout is not yet finished, would you consider adding at least a header or some easy to access solder pads for the IEC bus and the voltage rails? That way people who would like to install stuff internally would have an easier time with the wiring. Maybe there are also other signals which would be nice to have easy access to on the motherboard. |

That would be a great idea. I will be releasing a tiny version of my 1541 emulation that I am releasing for the SuperCard Pro board, and it is designed for an internal installation in C64/128/SX-64. A plug-in header option would be great.

Yep, he said it will. What's more I think the photo is with a breadbin already.
What will the new C64 reloaded owners do with their old keyboards with faulty keys? |

Really.... ?? A little exacerbated with this, the VSP bug is quite rare in regards to 99% of software isn't an issue - and IF you are unlucky to have a said fault then surely there is a work around for the original C64 PCB As I am not in the market for the product I am having a hard time finding the Value of the product - what am I really getting for €149? An unpopulated incomplete C64, which wont be usable out of the box unless I have (1) a 6502 and SID laying about OR (2)a C64 I want to victimize. I am truly sorry Jens, I admire you quite a lot, but perhaps I am too limited as I cannot see the Value for the market in this product. |

Just wondering... with my C64c I get a 'jail bar' effect, a common problem with many machines. Will this motherboard fix this? Thanks!

Any decent programs for testing your machine for VSP or Badlines?
Either my machine is perfect or I just haven't noticed these issues.... |

Pity this cannot be sold as a complete machine with a new keyboard and case.
