It's almost as if open source isn't the utopian silver bullet that some people have let themselves believe. On the whole, humans are lazy and selfish - there will always be someone who will take advantage of you if you let them, and open sourcing a project is a blatantly obvious way of allowing that to happen. For some people, that's fine because they're aware of the implications and are comfortable with them. But if that's the sort of thing that might upset you and cause you to look at an entire community with disdain and call them stupid, then open source is probably not the way to go.

Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

+1 Well sumnarised.

One or two bitter voices here, I guess mostly due to bad experiences & failed expectations in regard of what was expected from the community... I get that. IMO maybe still not a fair reason to call the entire community stupid , but whatever, the bitter tone drives home the point well enough.

In general, Id say *dont* open source.. Not until you give up on the project but still wanna pass the torch to some brave soul. These projects are often very person- driven and lets face it, not a whole lot of talent of the right sort left around. Some really talented individuals have done great things, but theres not a boatload of them.
Finally if all this is such a rough ride, then simply dont share your stuff with anyone, life will go on anyway
Find your happiness and only keep doing the stuff that brings you joy and satisfaction.

But also dont forget there are a lot of greatful people out there to who really admire and appreciate what you all do.
Cheers

I would say that it's up to the person (people) starting the project to choose the business model they want. It can be open source, closed source, sell it at a loss, or charge a million bucks for it. If someone asks you to change your business model, tell them to F off.

There are nasty people out there looking for personal gain, true dat, but some personal responsibility also wouldn't hurt.

In the end what matters is that it works (for you).
