New video on Youtube.

I'm definitely not coping as far as air combat goes.

I try and destroy an enemy runway with JP233 and then brave the voyage home, facing SAMs, AAA and enemy aircraft.

It doesn't end well.

Air combat tips welcome.

How's it going? I definitely need to somebody to bounce ideas off. I've hit a bit of a wall with a mission in Warzone 1.

If you need me to put a pre-installed version into the Zone, no problem. The PC source code of the game was released some years ago, so Digital Integration are unlikey to object.

I completed another mission last night, bombing the cooling towers and associated buildings deep behind enemy lines. Another 4 plane mission.

I'm pretty happy about it because unlike my recent runway attack mission, I was able to complete it after only a couple of attempts, though the experience gained from that earlier mission probably helped, and besides that I think I was probably lucky with enemy aircraft patrols.

A couple of thoughts, it makes sense minimising the use of auto throttle. It's very handy, but often the instant you climb, or otherwise fall below your set speed, it cuts in the afterburners, and they use literally (no, literally literally) use 10 times as much fuel as when you're at full throttle without afterburners. And on a 20 minute flight, that really cuts into your supply. I use afterburners for take off and keep them on till I'm at about 300 knots, then I take it off and before long pass 500 knots, using a fraction of the fuel.

My final approach to the target consisted of firing an ALARM missile as soon as the obligatory AA site became visible, then rapidly switching the remaining ALARM to indirect/loiter mode and firing that. This conveniently takes you to the next package, your bombs, so you just need to arm them and commit - all this with judicious release of decoy flares and an active ECM as several heat seeking missiles illuminated threat indicator.

Luck probably played a part, but I came through that unscathed and my unburdened Tornado was able to race back home at 200 feet and around 600 knots. I even managed a "Good" landing.

My personal Tornado blog continues......

I completed another mission today, which was to bomb an enemy vehicle repair facility. Well, that was the 4 plane mission, while the other aircraft bombed the facility's buildings, my specific task was to bomb any exposed vehicles I could spot.

At 23,000 feet that is not completely straightforward, at least identifying targets is quite tricky, but the TIALD (Thermal Imaging and Laser Designation) make things easier - And once you appreciate that all the necessary targets are in the compound, including a helicopter, it's fairly simple, just requiring some nimble target switching as you watch your bombs rain down on the vehicles from the TIALD monitor.

This mission pushed me get more familar with the rear seat controls which are actually very cool.

If you include the TIALD (which appears rather like a map) there are about 5 map devices for you to use. There's also the full screen map which I tend not to use, but might be handy for reference. More to my taste are the free scrolling map which you can assign to one of your TAB screens, the same goes for the TIALD, and the central moving map which places you at it's centre, or optionally and more usefully at the bottom centre where you can see more of what's ahead. This screen is also available to the pilot, though I tend to focus on the autopilot track display there. There's also the Waypoint screen, which is also essentially a map! I'm not sure if you can zoom on the Waypoint screen, but the previous 3 allow zooming, or zooming and scrolling, and also placing a Target of Opportunity Waypoint.

I don't remember another Amiga game which allowed you to grab your mouse and click to designate targets on a zoomable map while simultaneously viewing the 3D world going past, all of which happens in the cockpit. I remember being impressed when this was pointed out to me when the game was originally released, having failed to grasp the fact in my own brief attempts to assess the game.

It was a pretty ambitious and impressive game for the Amiga.

I made a short video which hopefully illustrates what I'm trying to explain above rather better.
