As a long, long time Amiga user this immediately captured my interest... I'm genuinely curious (mindblown perhaps is the more appropriate word?) about it, could someone please explain? I vaguely remember all the tech talk about the Amiga audio being actually 12bit, but this was quite an unexpected read. |

If you had an A600 with MMU (for example with ACA630, a beauty from the past), and an Indivision ECS of the first generation (the V2 doesn't allow this anymore), then you could use a somehow modified P96 driver and display the workbench in 256 colors. I did it circa 2010/2011...

Thanks, never ever heard of this.
That makes me even more curious about the actual HW implementation though! |

We were just talking about options for OCS/ECS switchover yesterday. expecially after trolling ebay prices.
so sticking my neck out a bit you might ne able to get 2 "Faiths" for that price. All depends on popularity and bulk buying prices Last edited by kipper2k; 06 April 2023 at 16:38. |

Happy to see this project progressing.
I still didn’t get what channel of distribution is planned for it. There is a GitHub but I believe it is just for the general specification of the project which aims at re-creating every chip of the Amiga as a standalone replacement, but will there be the data available for self-manufacturing? Also, I see no roadmap or expected milestones / dates, and I see for each chip a lot of proposition for upgrades which, as fun as they sound, look to me like as many possible ways to get lost on the way… Hopefully my kids will see this happening, it’s really exciting anyway… |

It's just a bit is fun. Homebrew. There are no roadmaps or detailed plans. Happens when it happens. If it happens. This is not a commercial venture. It's enthusiasts doing it primarily for themselves in their spare time.
All files for self manufacturing look like the intended method of distribution. No details about if they will be commercially manufactured. |

Github will not be updated until project is completed, there have been no offers of help as such so we will continue plodding along until it is complete. There is no official timeline as we are doing other things as well. Commercial manufacture is not planned as of this moment

I've had more than one person insist that we open source everything because it's "right," that they'll only help if I do and then don't anyway. I have literally have had more people try and sabotage me or rip me off than support the project.
No need to name-names, you know who you are. I used to jokingly refer to open source as a form of economic socialism, but that's just not true. Socialism is about ownership of our own labour, whereas open source is just the exploitation of labour and people keep proving me right. How am I wrong? Am I? Prove it. |

Personally I was all in favor of you to Copyright it so that if another company/vendor was to make and sell it you could make a few bucks per chip. A bit of pay for your work is worth it from what I will get from a set.

There are quite a few people who are trying to promote open source. For some projects, the smaller projects i dont think it is a bad idea. Sukkopera and others (including myself) have lost out to people skirting the provisions of open source rules and i believe lost interest of doing more projects. Nowadays with board houses capable of producing assembled projects quickly some people are quick to flood the market quickly with their "knock-offs", it doesnt do much for the enthusiasm to continue working on these projects, i want to do it as i enjoy trying to keep the Amiga alive and also to keep busy. i am hoping in 6 - 8 weeks we will have some some positive news. All the custom chips be will be drop in replacements (including Agnus)

By giving it away with no strings attached I don't get upset when other people 'profit' from it or whatever. And it frees me from any obligation or responsibility. People ask me if I am making more of something and I say no, you have everything you need do it yourself! Quote:

Now i am a pensioner and spending money to fund projects i expect to make enough to repay my investment so i can move ahead to the next project. I dont see people who have stolen mine and other peoples work (yes, stolen, as they never ask permission), do not thank you, do not offer to pay part of development and try to take the credit and profit. This project is basically due to the legwork and designs of Nonarkitten and it only takes a couple of selfish people to ruin it for everyone. The forum is full of people who have given up/moved on due to other people. What is your github page so i can peek ?

I didn’t want to open a can of worms, so apologies for that if it’s what I did. Thanks for your explanations and yes, open source is a funny thing.
I’m not talented enough to manufacture and “exploit” the work of others (which I would never do anyway…). I wish the project all the best cause it’s one of the thing we really need. I’ll follow patiently. Happy Easter! |

It's not a can of worms, just passing on my thoughts about opening up on projects. For this project it is not my decision to open source it anyway. i am thinking of selling on to people in UK, the mail costs seem to have gone down which may make it affordable for people there. Will have to check Aus/NZ |

Seems to me that if you have the equipment to make one your self go ahead. but made by a vendor should be a royalty. Pay the creator!

These should absolutely be open source projects. That's the only way I can see them constantly improving and bugs being ironed out, and them still being available in 100 years time. Together with a Raemixx board a FULLY OPEN SOURCE Amiga500 could be built, which would be a HUGE achievement.
BUT As you noticed, nobody ever helps. Most people just pretend, complain or waste time in useless talks. If this wasn't enough to turn down all your excitement about trying to make the Amiga world better (Seb's post above would have been enough for me to throw everything in the fire), here come all those stupid d*rks that are always ready to jump on the wagon of easy bucks. That's all the Amiga community is able to do with open stuff. So my advice is: keep these closed and squeeze every penny you can from the Amiga community. When you get rich enough, shut everything in a drawer, move to Hawaii and enjoy. This stupid community doesn't really deserve anything more than that. |
