Removing yellowing from Amigas with peroxide

I guess it's about time to stop.. could keep going forever..



I can already see a need for a paste, I want to do a dial face, but only the side that isn't printed.
The print is flaky just with cold water running over it, so this would remove it I'm sure,
if not because of the chemicals, perhaps by just sitting in the Sun immersed in any liquid.

Was this any particular Vanish product?

I see they aren't created equal. I also have a Vanish liquid spray that doesn't have the hydrogen peroxide warning.

Funny you can believe what you read on the label.. it does have 1st time amazing stain removal power

I just did this to my old Amiga 500 and the results were Fantastic! I used a store bought product called Creme Developer from a store in Australia called Priceline, and mixed in 2 tablespoons of powdered bleach. Poured all the keys and mix into a Zip locked Back and left out in the sun for 2 days

Looks to me like you should have taken them out of the sun a bit sooner..

Why?

It could just be the picture, but the grey buttons look bleached and uneven, F1-F5 for instance. This is how I would expect a keyboard to look:

The above keyboard is not mine, it was just a random picture I found of a nice looking keyboard.
When you write bleach, do you mean a chlorine based bleach as used in household cleaners? Because that is not a part of retrobright.

I have treated a few keyboards with good results, and the most difficult part is to make sure all top surfaces of the keys are exposed to equal amounts of sunlight and the hydrogen peroxide solution.

I used powdered bleach that hairdressers use to mix with peroxide., yes the sunlight is the toughest part, I did sit all the keys under ultraviolet light on the first night but the reaction was very little.

I used that powdered bleach too. One advice.
Don't do it!!!!!!

You will always get patchy uneven results. There is no way of getting it back to good state.

Use only peroxide with Vanish etc. or just cream peroxide.

Also it's good idea to mat clear coated after so no oxygen get to plastic again.

Since you're in Australia, just drop it into undiluted Vanish,
the one I posted a pic of, it has a hydrogen peroxide warning on it.

Definately clear coat-mine came back after 12 months.

BTW what recommended clear coat in Aus?

My turn :-) I recently brought a A530 which is yellow, so I decided to practice on a spare Impact series II, here is the case, it had been left in the peroxide over night and into the morning, this is just over 12 hours in the sun, no extra VU though it is in a warm room, notice the PSU, it was the same colour as that


Small difference, I saw someone on here wrap thir plastics with cling film so I tried it, big saver on the peroxide.
OK so what does it look like next to the A530


OK bit worried, this has been in the sun for 20 hours only, and it looks like its gone too far, plugged into my Amiga it stands out like a real saw thump, so I compared the boxes to see if it was the same colour, but they are not accurate as they both have different colour balances



What this does show is the A530's main badge should be the same colour as the case



when I checked the colour levels with the computer, the bleached case is almost identical to the A530 badge colour

SUCSESS!!!


Whats next then? 2 A500's, A4000, Mice, hmmm going to need more Peroxide

Okay, here comes my turn

I had a key on one of my A1200's keyboards that started yellowing. The key was a replacement key I got for my German A1200 keyboard, since the original key was wrong. I think the reason why it started yellowing is that the plastic is probably (?) different compared to the plastic of the other keys It used to be just as white as the others, but over time, it started yellowing.

Anyway, this single yellow key started bothering me so I thought it was time to make my own first experience with retr0bright. I used BBlonde plus some Vanish that I dissolved in warm water before. I put everything into cling film and exposed it to sun for a couple of hours. Since sun is not very intense here during this time of the year, I repeated the procedure the day after.

It's been a while since we had some pictures to look at so i will show this one. I bought 3 A500 keyboards from Airey36 on Ebay, all 3 looked exactly like the top one, the lower one is what one of the others looked like after i finished.

The keyboard was pasted with Redken 40 hair conditioner and left outside in the cold Canadian sun for 4 days, temperature ranged from -10 to +5 and the UV index (Scale of 1 - 11 here) was between 1 and 4.

The good thing being is that because it was pretty cold the paste did not dry out and i actually used vey little of it.

I'll do the other 2 in the next couple of weeks.

after (spot the key I dropped under my desk with out realising it):


the top text on the keys is a tinsy bit more faded than before due to me being an idiot and not putting them outside early enuf in the arvo - they then sat overnight in my laundry where they seem to have been bleached a little - lesson learned.
