Do you remember which virus name was showed by Disinfectant?
If it's the same name showed by Avast!, then the virus is surely on the disks.

I remember you writing something about it, but there are 800+ posts on this thread

It's been so long now that I can't recall the details, but I do remember that Disinfectant was unable to detect the virus, so I had to download a special utility to eradicate it.

If this virus came from Cosmic's A-Max disks, it must have happened when I started recovering individual files from those disks by MacBinary file copying using CrossMac, and transferring them to the Macintosh to be extracted.

I will have to review my earlier posts to recover those details before I attempt to make any further progress. I don't want to repeat what I've already done.

I downloaded all the anti-virus programs for the Macintosh that I could find when I discovered that my PowerMac was infected, many of which I never got around to trying. They were not easy to find (many could only be found by FTP searching), and I thought I'd better get them before they disappeared.

I will share all these programs when I get them sorted out, you can be sure of that.

The Avast! anti-virus program thread on Emaculation has received another reply:

That's what the new reply suggests.

I'll have a look at the http://www.virustotal.com site and consider whether it might be worth uploading those 720K A-Max formatted disk images (both the original and delinterleaved versions, just to be sure).

Edit: I've had a look and I'll upload them tomorrow.

What I would really like is for someone to tell me how to mount those images in emulation or why the deinterleaving didn't work.

When I went to upload my files at VirusTotal, they were displaying the following message:

Warning!
VirusTotal is supporting a high workload at this moment.
The scanning process of your sample can take over 15 minutes.

We suggest you to use the email interface in these situations. Follow the instructions on the "Email" page to do so.
If you wish you still can submit your sample via this interface.

I am going to email the files, which will take a little longer but will generate an email report of the file analysis.

Hey, VirusTotal is a fantastic resource!

Sending files by email:

Create a new message with <scan at virustotal dot com> as destination address of your email.
  1. Write SCAN in the Subject field.
  2. Attach the file to be scanned. Such file must not exceed 20 MB in size. If the attached file is larger, the system will reject it automatically.
  3. You will receive an email with a report of the file analysis. Response time will vary depending on the load of the system at the time of placing your request.
I sent the files and got the results back within a few minutes.

Mac OS virus infections were found in all four disk images as we had expected!

Results attached.

A-HA!!!!

So.. the next step is: how to remove the viruses? Is it worth the effort?
I suppose we could remove the virus only if:
- we can load the image in A-Max/Emplant (otherwise it would be impossible to remove the virus without damaging the disks' FAT)
- the infection were not file-destructive. I mean: if we can remove the virus from the infected files without damaging/deleting the files themselves

@Supamax,

I really don't think it's worth salvaging any of the files from these disks now.

I'm sure the infection I had on my Performa 6200 came from one of them.

System 6.0.2 and 6.0.3 boot disks are easy enough to get hold of, and we have a working copy of Mac PlayMate (I also now have the Mac PlayMate II colour version ). The biggest loss will be the MacWrite II application.

However, I've recently downloaded an Apple Applications Recovery CD and I'm hopeful that I will find a copy of MacWrite II on that.

Of course, I'll consider sending the disks on to you, if you'd like to try them.

Hi Cosmic,

It will be nice to get back to the business of Mac emulation on the PC with your A-Max disks in mind. It's no longer their content which interests me, but the mysterious 720K format of those A-Max 4 disks.

When I am ready, I will install A-Max on my Amiga 1200 and in WinUAE, starting with version 1.0 and finding out all about that before working my way up through the later versions.

You're probably right that this thread has run its course, so I'll be starting a new thread relating to my new adventures in the world of A-Max emulation.

BTW, I could return those A-Max floppy disks to you now if you'd like them back. I can make copies of the ones which interest me now.

That card looks in good nick and the ROM sockets are populated!

Not long to go on that (just under two days), so I might make a bid, even tough nothing else is included.

Leading bid is US$9.99 ATM, but USPS shipping to the UK is US$21.14 and I would have to bid US$10.49 minimum to win the auction.

So total my total minimum outlay will be US$31.63, or £20.52

Is a Zorro card compatible with the A4000's expansion bus?

Edit: According to the manual, the A-Max II+ card requires a 100-pin Zorro slot and the A2000 and A3000 are listed as suitable machines. The A4000 has 4 Zorro 3 slots. I will have a look in the box tomorrow and check whether they are compatible.

Thanks, Cosmic!

If it looks like it will fit, then I will bid for it, but not too early.

If I go for it, I will try my very best to get it.

With luck, it might not be that difficult. Remember, I won the CrossMAC auction with the only bid!

WOW, interesting!
I hope you'll get it! It would be very useful for our thread (although it would be nice if it had all the accessories - instruction manuals, cables, etc.).
