First Samari on the Amiga sounds better and scrolls smoother / better. Totally out classes the ST in the comparison video.

Dizzy however other than the ST music sounding more muffled (?) looks to run almost exactly the same.

Absolutely, but that all comes down to CPU horsepower. The actual audio hardware is the same in both machines.

STE is capable of outperform the previous ST model:

[ Show youtube player ]

It is designed and running on a standard 8 MHz Atari STE with 4 MB RAM at 50 frames per second most of the time; (currently an obsolete demo).

Sound is entirely based on digital samples at 12.5 KHz, audio mixer is capable of 3 simultaneous voices. YM2149 is not used at all.

Colour is based on complementary dithering; using only 16 colours, but 2 frames with different pixel colour placement to create the illusion of many more colors via colour mixture, due to fast rendering (50 Hz). The effect do not work well when fps drops below 40

One of the key is the availability of 4 MB of "Chip" RAM and single pass blitter sprite drawing.

The porting of x68000 and Neo-Geo - the direct running of the game code on STE is Amazing.
