I performed the split install to run off USB more than once and it never failed. It can't be hit and miss unless someone does it wrong.

It's the other way around. The more power, the better headroom you have. Power adapter rating are max output capability, if you don't use a powerful enough adapter it'll be strained and can literally burn up if it's badly made.
Power ratings are to be treated with respect as they can cause a lot of (maybe dangerous) troubles...

balls wasted money on new raspberry pi power supply. The asus one I was using was actually 2.0 amps. Which prob would have been ok for what I use them for
