For me as much as our family started off with An A500, it has to be the A1200.

I like them all
Ok ok, the A2000, A4000T and maybe the CD32 are kinda ugly The A600 is the cutest and fits in every Backback. Hmmm, i think the A1200 is the Sweetspot ok, lets go with that one |

My favourite to type on is the A1000, then my A2000. The A500 is OK, not quite as good as the original 1985 ST or 1987 Mega ST keyboard but much better than the 520STFM/1040STF etc

I don't get why people says about A2000 - ugly - this is probably best desktop Amiga from PIC perspective (only A3000T and A4000T can be better but they are not desktop).

Its big and bulky and if you start adding stuff to the front that doesn’t colour match its stars looking ”ghetto”. Its also a prettly poorly designed PC to be honest. The placement of some stuff is really annoying. I have two of them and I try to give them some love and when you throw in the right upgrades it becomes useful, but considering the bulk, its hard to favor it over other models. |

I did show a lot of love for the A2000 and i got mine in the early 2000's. I truly loved it because it is the one (except T variants) which can take the more expansions, including 4 ISA slots.
But mine was always cursed. I had 3 different mobo, now a perfect 6.x reproduction from 2022, i had 3 different PSU, now a powerful ATX. I had every trouble imaginable including Blizzard 2060 dying for no reason, one zorro slot which could just disappear while the computer was on, the Megichip addon would move from Gary 1 mm for no reason needing to dismount everything, tantalum caps exploding from GVP spectrum board, computer refusing to boot with an Algor USB because of the boot rom, bridgeboard failing, etc. I remember i was so obsessed with making the computer to work as my flagship that i was thinking of it while in bed with my (hot) girlfriend of that time (20 years ago). Eventually i moved to the A4000 and had much less troubles since then. My A2000 is still not in working state so far but i hope that maybe one day it will be. |

Mine doesn't work anymore. Have a 500GB HDD now. Not a bad idea to back it up before it does stops working.

My favourite Amiga would have to be the A1200.
(I had x2 of them at one point). Loved the aesthetics, the power (compared to the earlier models) and the ability to expand them. I always wanted to tower my A1200 up, and add a CD drive, an HDD and an accelerator card to it. But BITD I never manged to do that. Amazing machine. |

How is that, that it's often mentioned recently here, that both A500+ and A600 had a 2MB Chip as standard? Wasn't 1MB standard? Even in recently released port of Final Fight, I think I read that some of the ECS (A500+, A600) machines had standard 2MB. |

The potential of the A500+ and A600 for games was never really exploited, although a few later games needed 1Mb Chip RAM or were enhanced by it (Tubular Worlds needing 1Mb chip for any sound at all comes to mind). I guess both were released too close to the A1200 for them to be fully exploited. At least Workbench 2 and the ECS improved them greatly as productivity systems, and the compatibility stuff did get largely solved later (I think Relokick took up 512k of memory, so anything 1Mb only and not-Plus would now need more than 1Mb).

I really miss to not own A2000 - have only A2000 motherboard so in time it will be repaired and will try to install in some PC enclosure. But in overall when compared to PC market A2000 was not so bad. Well... PC's were boring also - this changed relatively late - i recall definitely one company making not boringly looking computers - SGI but this is different story. |

If 2mb was a standard bundle for 500+/600 then they could have made 2mb sized levels for games but really it's not going to make better games, less repetition in graphics/sound perhaps but from a gamers point of view it's not really important.
If you want to do 28khz stereo sequenced sample loop based music for 'MP3 quality' it does make a massive difference yes. There are some 1mb only MODs that are pretty close to what people listen to on YT music videos, Zoolook comes to mind. Depends on the user requirements really. |

if you still have it try for fun putting it in the freezer for 12 hours, then wait around 20-30 mins to dry and try it on the A1200, mine once got stuck and wouldn't boot and did this trick and until today it works |

The A1200 was proof of that. But the trouble of having more levels is more data is required, along with possibly having/wanting better music tracks is not a RAM issue but a disk size issue, using the same drives as 7 years previous was a big mistake too. Even Atari updated their floppy drives like 4 times!

The A2000 was in a Leftover PC Case; that why it looks so... äeahm, "boring". I always loved the looks of the Amiga Desktops (A500/A600/A1200) the most. SGI was cool yeah, but a SGI Indy or SGI Indigo isnt to hot in my eyes, but hey, at least they tried. Last edited by Torti-the-Smurf; 11 March 2024 at 13:15. Reason: adding Quote |
