And you had to be careful of other software using too much in the way of CIA bandwidth. Some programs using lots of interrupts would have a dramatic effect on the connection speed, even without maxing out the CPU.
Additional serial ports made a huge difference - a HyperCOM 3 interface for my A1200 was like a breath of fresh air. The bottleneck was then the modem, not the serial port, and I could even use the other serial port to share the dial-up connection with my PC. Later, when the Mediator came out I was able to share the dial-up connection to my LAN, which worked really well until I finally got broadband. These days my Amigas are connected a variety of ways: Ethernet (Ariadne 2, PCI or PCMCIA depending on the machine), or occasionally a Wifi PCMCIA card. Serial connections have been relegated to terminal use for debugging etc. |

Use cases : IMP of course ! :-)
Speaking of which, I wonder if the upcoming IMPBox will be a kind of plipbox ? Also, IRC as in the old days, WHDLoad (can check updates) and files transfers. Question : how do you tweak WHDLoad to disable/re-enable roadshow ? Cheers ![]() |
