Thanks for understanding! I used to write regular reviews and interviews for a paperback reader website which would earn me about $30 every few months, but no one has been sending me any comics to review for a while and I've been so busy with Amiga projects that I haven't been able to write anything for months. I feel kinda guilty for spending my birthday money on a Cobra 030/28 accelerator, but maybe now that I have a much faster Amiga I can get more work done, and hopefully make something I can contribute back to ClassicWB. At the moment I'm nearly finished Spare Desk program, which would be useful for people wanting to open multiple applications that use the same 16 colour palette for their GUI graphics on separate screens rather than cluttering up the Workbench.
I saw that you were considering an Emulation add-on for ClassicWB, I think that's a great idea! Maybe a few different application add-on packs could be made, like a games development package that includes Backbone, GRAC and GRAAL, and other free game making software. We could make this "ModernWB" an add-on too, since the core ClassicWB package is really well made already and we wouldn't be replacing much, just adding some themes and applications that aren't already in the packs. |

Cammy, I am astounded at what you have managed to achieve with this... maybe you should consider a "Paypal donate" button on the site that you use to release your packs?
TBH, I would certainly pony up the dough for this, even if it was shareware... |

Hi Cammy - I'm just having a look at the Palette now. I've noticed you have posted a FullPalette version and a Scalos Palette version in another thread - but the colours are slightly different between the two.
Which one is the unaltered one from Rebel? |

Hi Bloodwych, I'm sorry about the two different palettes, I really shouldn't have spread it around before it was ready. Rebel has only recently finished adjusting the palette, and made it much better than it was earlier, even though the differences are very slight, the results in the games, programs, icons, GUIs and remapped images are apparent. Here are the links to the final palette for each program:
FullPalette - http://home.exetel.com.au/amiga/FullPalette.prefs Scalos - http://home.exetel.com.au/amiga/ScalosPalette.pre ImageStudio - http://home.exetel.com.au/amiga/Workbench16.palette I'm really sorry for the confusion. |

Excellent - thank you very much Cammy.
I wish you well on your themed Workbench packs too. As I said, feel free to use anything out of my packs you want. |

Thanks Bloodwych, you're very kind! If you ever need anything I have to offer you're welcome to it too, if I ever make anything worthwhile.
Just the other night I installed an Indivision AGA into my A1200 with the DKB 1202 8MB RAM/FPU/RTC expansion, ran a few programs and took a screenshot of Workbench running in 1024x768 with this palette. I probably should have chosen a better picture to open in MultiView as the dithering looks a little obvious, but I think it's honest to show that 16 colours isn't as perfect as 16,777,216 colours but it's still usable! I love how responsive the system is, multitasking away effortlessly even with only a 14Mhz 020 running the show, and there's still plenty of memory left to run some more programs and games if I wanted to. |

Amiga will never die!

I've been working on some icons and GUI images for our "Modern Workbench" pack which all use my optimized 16 colour palette. I wanted to compare the results of how GUI images, icons and photo images remap to the 16 colour palettes used by other OSs, to see if any of them could match my own. What has proven to be a decent test in the past has been to simply search for "bikini" in Google Images and judge the results of the colour remapping and dithering. This is something I have done throughout the development of my palette, checking to see if the results are better or worse for each slight change I made to each pen along the way until I had perfected it. To perform this test, I loaded each OS's palette into FullPalette and loaded IBrowse again, so the images are remapped and dithered each time, the palettes weren't simply switched on the fly so this is an honest comparison.
This is the 16 colour palette from Apple's MacOS. This is the 16 colour palette from one of my favourite alternative OSs, Acorn's RiscOS. Here is the 16 colour palette from hell, Microsoft's Windows. And finally here is the same page loaded with my 16 colour palette. Just to clarify, I have spent years perfecting my palette to work with as many Amiga GUIs, Workbench games, MOD players, icon sets, photos, illustrations, 3D CGI, and any other images I can throw at it. I have disected and compared as many alternate 16 colour palettes as I can find from around the world, and I have made this palette completely OCS-compatible, and there are no pens that cause AGA screen flashing (such as 255,255,255 and 0,0,0). I doubt a better all-round compatible palette could be made, I can't change a single pen value without results looking worse. |
