I would have offered the awesome Cadaver to this thread, but it fails to grip me completely for one reason only: combat is too clunky. Since you have to do quite a lot of it, it is annoying at best. Of course the epic puzzles in the game make up for everything.

Elvira, Another World and It Came From The Desert is the first ones which comes to my mind. Ah, and Police Quest!

I was most impressed by these games (in order). Really dangerous stuff.

1-UFO - Enemy Unknown
2-Perihelion
3-Fallout 1-2
4-Monkey Island 1-2-3
5-Flashback
6-Wasted Dreams
7-Oddworld- Abe's Oddysee.
8-Operation Stealth

These came to my mind without thinking.

I think many of the games mentioned that i know of take some time to introduce an interesting character. Even if it isn't the player character. Eg. eye of the beholder the interesting character is whoever is able to watch through that orb thing.

Though the immortal didn't.

They should have made it in classic platform style, IMHO. It would have been brilliant; I care not for uniqueness.
BTW, there's also another SNES games that copies it, though the name escapes me. It clones the ball mechanic, and is woeful.
Arabian Nights was the straight up platform version of Soccer Kid.

Retro: the Ultima and Phantasie series (C64)
Another World, Flashback, King of Chicago, and Wings (Amiga)
Fallout 1&2, Planescape, The Wing Commander series (PC)

Modern: Anything by Bioware, including Knights of The Old Republic, Dragon Age, and most recently Mass Effect 2.

True, but size of character is smaller. I like Arabian Nights; easily a top tier platformer but Amiga needed more of these.

I think the only Amiga game that had me really hooked on the story/world was Flashback. Oh yeah and Rick Dangerous 2 if that counts.

The games I've played with the best atmosphere / story are:
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Perihelion, Shadow of the Beast II, Wing Commander, Wings on the Amiga for me.

Betrayal At Krondor, Return To Krondor (The only 2 RPG's I've ever finished) Wing Commander I & Expansions, Wing Commander II& Expansions, Wing Commander III, Privateer I & Expansion, Privateer II, Protostar: War on the Frontier on the PC.

I really liked "Covert Action" because of its plot (I am even actually playing this btw.). It would have been quite nicer without its bugs though.

Perihelion
Covert Action
Eye of the Beholder II
Midwinter - it came with a freakin novel (well, almost)
and Birds of Prey, don't know why, but I look back at that game like it was somewhere I went on holiday.

on amiga:
Another World
It Came From The Desert
Wings

on pc:
Alone In The Dark - The atmosphere and world grabbed me in instantly...
Beneath A Steel Sky - My favourite adventure game ever (as you might guess from my avatar )
Full Throttle - Short but so cool ! One of my favourite 90's memories.
Kana little sister - I was surprised how this drew me in, the only game that has made me burst in tears. Recommended!
Monkey Island 1 & 2 - I was never so much into pirates but these were just so fun.
Phantasmagoria - When I was a kid this was really epic, atmosphreric and SCARY, not so much these days :/
The Dig - Never completed this but always loved the atmosphere, story, world, audio and gfx !
Under A Killing Moon - this one is underrated, ahead of its time and really cool!
Willy Beamish - This was so awesome when I was younger :/

on both:
Larry 1 & 3 - just wish I could get laid too
Space Crusade - this is my favourite Warhammer 40,000 product, awesome game with cool plot, setting and awesome tune that draws you straight in...
