The video series, ignoring the off-topic comments, explores the evolution of any new computer system prior to what we used to call, "Canned Software." In my humble experience (IMHE ?) in the late 70s and 80s, if you needed it, you wrote it (or found someone who would accept $5 an hour to do it for you). This series explores that scenario, and I find it engaging. Thom, I commend your well planned videos, and hope the distractions don't veer you away from your ongoing endeavours
![]() [Prior to obtaining an HDD, the (2 years after your time frame) 1988 Fred Fish disk 103 had DOSKwik, a set of 2 programs that could R/W contents to RAM at an incredible speed, getting a disk sized content of files to their destinations in a fraction of the time] -- my own off-topic, at least at this point in your series, comment. It used the same routine that loaded the Kickstart disk. Last edited by bdb; 21 July 2024 at 16:32. Reason: Adding unnecessary Grist to the Grinder |

Reverse engineering would be no problem for EU and UK.
Not sure about the strange jurisdiction in the US ... Any patents however would be expired, so the method itself is no longer under any protection. But there are also other, maybe better (?) alternatives: https://aminet.net/package/util/misc/SofTalk SofTalk replaces thehttps://aminet.net/package/util/libs/translator42 https://aminet.net/package/dev/src/trans42src This library is a drop-in replacement and works with all software that(still needs a narrator device) There is also an other possible route: Tiny Speech Synth by Stan 1901: https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=50530 JS online version: https://heckmeck.de/demoscene/tiny-speech-synth-js/ |

Perhaps but still easiest is just to take files from AOS2 - most of us legally own more than few Amiga systems so... Btw - not sure how computationally demanding is linear predictive coding... it should deliver way higher voice quality than original TTS in Amiga. |

http://aminet.net/package/util/sys/espeak http://aminet.net/package/mus/misc/flite-bin-m68k The latter also in form of a device: http://aminet.net/package/mus/misc/flite_device (for PPC-Amigas, but with source code - comes with its own "say" command) If the Amiga it online anyways, one could use Google's TTS api ... |

Guys, can you please break the TTS discussion into its own topic?

Working on content for the next "Amiga as Workstation in 1986" video.
Here is a program that displays a heatmap rendered from an external system and sensors. It leverages Intuition's Screen system to show 2 layered viewports of low and hi resolution, because each scan line can be a different resolution, allowing the engineer to maximize screen space. |

Do you have the continuation of the series planned ahead, or do you just find stuff in between the episodes ? I sat outside reading the (real, not pdf) special issue (1987) of Amiga World outside some days ago (when it didn't rain, which it seems to do every day in this country). This was a bit later than the release of the Amiga 1000, but still only A1000 content (mentions the Amiga World show which hadn't take place yet, and where the "New Amiga 500 and 2000" models should be presented).
As this magazine was aimed for everyone else than those who see the Amiga as a games machine, there were a lot of full-page ads in it for the software and hardware available at the time, and to stay at the topic, is these kind of productivity software (many word processing, database and spreadsheet apps) also something you will take a look at further on ? |

Nothing is planned. This is all off the cuff based on my experiences, and the experiences of colleagues at the time.
While I have an overall view of what I am attempting to put together, anything is possible, but I do try to keep it clear without going too much into the weeds. One of the major things that will be tackled is the comparison of the Amiga to other personal computers, and making the case of why the Amiga was a better fit, e.g. writing the example programs on the Atari ST using GEM, on the IBM PC/AT using GKS, on the Sun 2/120 using GKS, and observing the differences in environment and what was available to give sufficient context. (Those of you who were doing workstation graphics will recognize GKS, as it was one of the big standards for cross platform workstation graphics, and that GEM's VDI is descended from GSX which was Digital Research's implementation of GKS.) -Thom |

Sun-3's expensive cost includes ECC memory support. Sun focused on the workstation market to be a master for a specific market segment. ECC memory requirement is still in play for modern workstations. |
