The characters are plastic ones, the ones that are used for names on doors to apartments, only smaller, maybe for some sign. I found them in the cellar at my workplace. Originally white, spraypainted them black, and then painted the front of them with a brush.

If you want to know an easy way to paint those characters, simply use a recipient with a few layer of ink on it and gently soak the letters on, then push away slowly.

Another way is "dressing" a soda cap with some damp cloth, put the ink on it and use as a stamper.

One final picture of my special Amiga 500, it is still work in progress, but ok for the moment. I have now installed a HDD with workbench 2.1. I also wanted to install a kickstart switcher, but it wasn't physically possible with the ide adapter in place, that's a shame. Still, I'm very pleased with the result.

I just stumbled over this thread when searching for something else. Kudos x 666 to you Witchmaster. This is by far one of the most magical hardware hacks I've ever seen.

My 2cents,

Few years ago I made a similar mod, but with All-in-one PC motherboard w/TV out to Play MAME on TV, it was Great. I took old 5 Disk CD Changer, took the guts out, used the Dremel tool to cut all the holes. Small 150W ATX PS, no floppy , no CDROM. I used infrared keyboard with mouse to control it.

Maybe some day I could do Amiga mod like that...

I'm now thinking of replacing the A500 mainboard in this beast with a A1200 mainboard. Does anyone happen to have a working A1200 mainboard for sale? Thanks in advance!

I connected the keyboard and mouse using these DIY electronics projects:
--------------
PS/2 keyboard adapter (MMKeyboard). +5V power line for the adapter is connected to the PC PSU since it can supply more power. http://aminet.net/package/driver/input/mmkeyboard. Price: 7€
--------------
PS/2 mouse adapter (MousePS2). Power line for this adapter is also connected to the PSU. http://aminet.net/package/docs/hard/mouseps2. Price 7€

The IDE connector is a little expensive, maybe 60€ if I remember correctly. I would recommend that you do a similar mod like this but instead using an Amiga 1200, then you will automatically have an ide connector, and with some extra RAM you can install WHDload and play a bunch of games from the HDD.

I will consider that when its time to play with it :-)
I am currently working on a retro build for aros so it will have to wait a while.

Nice! Good luck with your project.

The keyboard adapter I used is an old design I found on Aminet. I actually made one a few days ago for a Commodore CDTV. It uses the old and obsolete PIC16F84, I have extra of these, the circuit only needs this PIC and a few other components. If you are willing to solder the cables yourself I can program the PIC (which I managed to do in Windows 7 64bit after some work), build the circuit and send it to you for a small fee. How does this sound?
