Wow, so from thousands of users (some threads have more than 750K views), right now 38 (most of them Grind devs friends and supporters) have voted for Grid. It is clearly sentenced now XD. Who gives a fuck about Doom? shut up and just talk about Grind around here.

Some have exactly what they deserved.

Look, I'm waiting for Grind. But Doom levels in the Dread/Grind engine?

Sign me right the f*ck up. That would rock.

Each time you click on a thread it is counted as a view. The average number of active users per day is well below 100 right now.

That being said I can't say I'm surprised by this reaction to the poll

. Even if I inderstand the concept of your post, it's irrelevant given since how many years the 1st game has been released upon the second that is still in development .

There can be no doubt that an actual Doom port, running on a mimally expanded (say 1MB to be generous) A500 would be a great technical achievement but the fact is, people would play if to 10 mins and that would be it. Given the monumental amount of effort it would need to make the game work (note, not the engine, per se) by which I mean level and asset optimisation, that's a lot of effort for a cut-down experience. All of Dooms art assets are designed for a 256 colour display with at least 6 bits per gun (VGA) and in EHB with a 4-bit per gun resolution, it looks questionable at best. Nevertheless, you can already run the full game comfortably on a suitably expanded A500.

The other reason Doom is a less interesting target, at least for me is the fact it's all been done to death. "It runs doom" is a meme now, with everything from dedicated FPGA circuits to digital pregnancy tests being included in the menagerie of things that can run it.

GRIND is a new game, one that is designed specifically around the limitations of the engine and machine, with a cohesive art style and with plenty of love being poured into it.

Pedant writes

Ok sir, let's make a search for "6 months ago" (Grind was announced on Oct 2023)

Doom: "Showing results 1 to 40 of 532"
Grind: "Showing results 1 to 40 of 120"

Even if you add the entire Grind thread, which is 224 posts, it still doesn't seem like nobody wants to talk about Doom around here, Au contraire, there's so much of it, that it actually became a bit of a running joke.

Before I answer can I plug a Graffiti or a DCTV into the RGB out, or install an Indivision? Just for monitor compatibility reasons.

One of two of the early levels from the shareware version of Doom put into Grind would be a nice homage to the game that inspired it.

But with a twist - the normal exit just puts you straight back at the start of the same level. You have to find another way out, or you are stuck in Doom forever!

Whatever search you do, Doom will have a highest score result since the game is well known for 30 years now and has been named an uncountable number of times. It is thus logical that even if people speaks about Grind that Doom gets mentioned as this is the game that inspired it. So yes, comparing number of iterations of these names is not as relevant. Even if it is understandable to do comparisons..

I enjoyed the original doom Easter eggs in doom 2016, though it's a bit of a shame it didn't revert to sprite graphics in those sections

It was a rather innocent joke, which understandably can go over the head of people not familiar with an obscure satirical column in the old paper-edition Guardian. Still, there was no real reason to bristle up at that.

So which one is it? You said earlier that you "understand the concept of my post" which honestly wasn't meant to be super seriously scientific, but only a lighthearted rebuttal to @x-vision's quite hysterical claim. So why the nitpicking?

To paraphrase a recent comment from a wise poster, "it's important that other people are wrong."

@dreadnought : Maybe you missed the "wink" at the end of my sentence and thus you seems, here, to take things a bit too seriously.

Aye. Yet I sometimes think about what would happen if people wouldn't constantly waste their time and energy on posting that people who prefer ice cream over cake are absolutely wrong.
