Here is a tip for those wide screens:
Use 4:3 ratio, don't stretch, use sides of screen to dry socks.

Just tried my A500 with a Sony Bravia (KDL-15G2000) 15" LCD TV (via scart) - god awful. Grainy, shaky, blurred and the colour was bad too... tried changing the settings with not much luck the internal speakers = very poor sound.

Philips CM8833 mk2 p1sses all over it in comparison... crt ftw!

No big surprise, Paul. A LCD can't beat a decent CRT TV/monitor. Better colors, better contrast, authentic pixel-look.

@frost242

The specs in the above link say vertical refresh of 56-75Hz. How are you connecting for native Amiga PAL modes which require 50Hz?

I've got @ least 1 CRT left you can have (no charge). Postage will be a bugger, though.
(17' I think)

Calgor: yes I am. I wrote a little about on my blog, it's unfortunately in french but you can see a little picture of the screen with the Heartcore from Iris which is 50Hz PAL.

You have to know that the scandoubler/flickerfixer is not perfect, you can see some gliches when you open a window on the workbench, the mouse leaves some grey pixels when moved, but it's not that annoying.

I'll also test my Atari ST this weekend.

I used babelfish to translate your page. The picture looks okay. It may not be good for games if the mouse pointer causes grey pixels.

Did you use VGA or SCART or SVideo or composite connection?

Also, can you do a 4:3 aspect ratio? I heard the samsung 226bw may not be able to do that.

I use the SCART connection. Also, the 225MW does 4:3 aspect ratio.

Ah, in Oz we don't get many SCART connector LCDs, or the 225MW, so it could be that the VGA connection can only handle 31kHz 56Hz, not 31KHz 50Hz. As far as I have seen, no one has ever reported that SCART RGB connectors will not accept 15kHz 50Hz, please correct me if I am wrong.
Can they also accept the 31kHz modes that you would normally put through the VGA connector? i.e. is using the SCART connector like using a multisync monitor?

I'll give a try this evening and let you know. Btw, I had another LCD TV set that had a SCART connector, but the TV set couldn't handle the Amiga's video signal correctly.

Don't try the 31kHz through your SCART if you are not sure if it is supposed to work, it may (as they usually say when operating outside monitor specs) damage your monitor if it is far outside the sync range.

Oh damned, yes, it may not be safe... Anyway, I also own an Atari Falcon with demos running strange video modes (from PAL 15KHZ/50Hz to VGA 31KHz/100Hz), I will test them.

the monitor does not accept PAL signal throught the VGA port. Anyway, the SCART is here to help.
Sorry, I didn't test real VGA modes.

Thanks for that info! So the specs do mean something, usually the sync ranges may be for the VGA port. Most Viewsonics state they can do 50Hz, I am going to ask Viewsonic if it is on the VGA port.

@frost242

It was the 31kHz 50Hz mode you tried right? The 15kHz 50Hz ones will almost certainly not work via the VGA input on virtually all monitors.

No no, I tried 15Hz 50Hz on the VGA.

It seems that the specs given for the Samsung are for VGA modes.

Can you please try a 31kHz 50Hz mode via the VGA input? (Such as scandoubled PAL if you have a flickerfixer, or dblpal with VGAOnly monitor driver). I suspect they may not work due to the 56Hz spec, but you never know, some monitors can do slightly more than their specs.

I have a Samsung 225MS (has RGB, and S-Video, not Scart, since we can't get SCART as easy in Australia). It does work using the VGA input, but only on the Higher Res modes. Ie, MultiSync and DoublePal/NTSC. The quality wasn't bad, but wasn't too good either (had these faint lines in some places due to the scale I guess).. The RBG inputs are fine for the normal modes tho ...

Laters.
