Has anyone had any luck removing a MegaChip Mod board from an Agnus socket w/o a PLCC chip puller? If this mb turns out to be toasted I was hoping to salvage that at least.

Erm, you just pull.
A PLCC extractor would be useless for removing a megachip. You cannot even see the socket it is plugged into, let alone get a tool in there. Fingers on either side of the pcb, try and lift vertically. I'd leave it in place for the timebeing. Last edited by alexh; 12 January 2008 at 17:54. |

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to give an update teaser. I'll be soldering the replacement battery in tomorrow night as soon as I can track down some heat shrink tubing. Then I'll put the cover on. The auction didn't come with a keyboard, just the contents of the case. I have an Amiga mouse from my A500, but I had to purchase a A2000 keyboard off Ebay. As soon as it comes in I can finally see if this poor mistreated Amiga can fly again. I still have some work on the case to do, but it's cosmetic. In the meantime I'll leave you with an appetizer. Caution large pics !! Motherboard in case http://www.dropchecks.com/biggettingdressed1.html Almost there.... http://www.dropchecks.com/biggettingdressed2.html |

Just make sure you check the 5/12V lines are not shorting to ground because you have water or residue under a socketed chip.
I have washed motherboards before, but I ripped off any socketed chips 1st. Having 2MB chip on a 2000 would be cool, but the money needed to make/buy one would be better spent on a 1200/3000/4000. |

Well, she didn't fly. I flipped the power switch tonight, no sparks, no blue smoke, not even a sizzle. The power supply fan twitched. So I guess it's either a short somewhere or a bad ps. I suspect a short. The case is bent in places and the bottom is bowed. Likely something touching it shouldn't. But I have no clue where to begin.

Disconnect the PS from the motherboard (and drives) and see if it runs with no load.
While the supply is disconnected theck the MB 5/12V to chassis ground with a meter. Finding the short should not be a problem, fixing it might be. |

Update:
I was stymied on my other project with the GVP SCSI hard disk install, so I turned my attention back to this project. I had one good A2000 that was booting up and seemed to function okay. So like a true tinkerer I decided to see if I could simply pull the motherboard from this project and put it in the good A2000 case and see what happened. Well, some success. The good power supply did come on and the replaced motherboard did try to boot. It finally settled on a green screen. Which I understand is the indication of a problem with chip memory. So I took a closer look at the settings for the MegaChip upgrade and the board itself. It looked like jumpers were okay. Then I looked closer at the Agnus chip on the board. Some "(*&(*^" person had inserted an 8372A chip. No wonder I was getting a green screen. I have a PLCC chip puller coming. As soon as I can I will pull it out of the upgrade board and put it back in its socket on the motherboard. I might get lucky and it will work. What I wouldn't give to get my hands on the sucker who pulled that fast one on me. I suppose I never will though. Anyone have a 8375 Fatter Agnus Part # 318069-11 they'd be willing to part with? |

If i had a spare of that part i would send it you... man, the ass whom did that to the motherboard needs a spanking! Glad you have atleast sorted out the problem though... you might get lucky raiding an old A500+ for the chip, didnt the A500 R.6a have that chip... i must double check. @DoogUK, Thanks for the hack i just love hacks for breakfast!! |
