What I'm using at the moment is +5v to pin one of the chip for kick3.1 and earth on pin one for kick1.3. The switch is a 2way 3 pole with a outer pole as earth, middle pole as switch and the other outer pole as power. EDIT: This is for a A600 BTW. |

Hmm, what type of chip are you using and how many?

The chip is a SGS/ST 27c160. I only need to use one for the A600.

Ok, I thought you had a 27c400 and was wondering how you could fit two kickstarts on it.
Pin 1 is A18 as you found out, and pin 42 is A19. Bend out both A18 and A19 so that they don't touch the socket. Tie A19 to ground and wire the switch to toggle A18 high / low as you were going to do. Burn the kickstart images one after another in the beginning of the chip. Should work, good luck. :-) |

I burned 4 kickstarts to the 27c160. I can switch between 2 using the method Jope mentioned
Now I'm stumped at how to switch to the other 2 kickstarts, any ideas? I used copy /b kick13.bin+kick2.05.bin+kick3.1.bin+kick2.04.bin Kick4.bin to burn the rom. Only kick2.05 and kick3.1 work with the switch. I have also tried toggling A19 high/low but I get the same results. i.e. No kick1.3. Arnie. |

I have burnt 4 kickstarts to one eprom 27c160.
I can switch between 3 of them using this wiring diagram. I'm stumped as to how to switch the 4th kickstart which requires +5v to pin 1 & 42. I'm using a DPTP switch but I'm only using 3 pins of one side at the moment. Any ideas? Last edited by Arnie; 14 February 2013 at 22:45. |

I've just seen your post in the A600 Dual Boot Kickstart thread, which reminded me of your problem. If you're using a slider switch ATM, would you consider using a rotary (wafer) switch instead to do this? It might make for a far easier solution. |

Hey Prowler,
I'm using a 3 position pole switch at the moment I looked at a 4 position slider switch and a rotary switch as possibilities. I've also looked into a switching circuit, something along the lines of a kickstart switcher. Out of the 3, the slider switch looks possible. Ideally a switching circuit would be best but, a bit out of my skill range. |

The reason I posted is that I have a lot of recycled makaswitch parts and would be happy to design and build such a switch for you FOC if you can accommodate it in your machine.
It will need at least two wafers by my reckoning, but should be quite straightforward. Break-before-make type would be the safest option, even though I imagine you would intend switching over only with the power down. |

Thanks Prowler, that's a very generous offer.
I can find room in the old 600 to try the switch out. |

Hi Arnie,
Your 4 kickstarts switching function can be achieved with a mini makaswitch using a single 2 pole, 6 way, break-before-make, double-sided wafer. (The switch has provision to restrict the movement to 4 positions.) The switch should be no more than 20mm deep and 30mm diameter inside the case. Do you have a suitable knob to fit the ¼-inch diameteter shaft? If not, I can include one with it. And how long would you like me to make the three wires to connect to pins 1, 22 and 42 of the 27c160 chip? I can assemble this tomorrow and you should have it by the end of the week. |

Hey Prpwler,
Great work there buddy. Make the wires 30cm long, this will give me plenty of scope to move the switch around. If you could include a suitable knob, that would be great. Thanks for your time, I owe you one. Arnie |

You're welcome mate. I'm only returning the favour you did me when you sold me your Catweasel MkIII card. PS. Could you just confirm your address for me via PM? Then I'll try to get it sent off to you tomorrow. |

Hi Arnie,
Thanks for your PM. I handed over the package at my local Post Office at 14:35 this afternoon for delivery to you by First Class Post. Don't be alarmed at the size of the package. The switch is nowhere near as big as you might think, I just packed it well. I have enclosed it in a small cardboard housing so that you can test it without physically mounting it in your machine, and I have labelled the three wires with the respective 27c160 pin connections. If you decide to mount the switch, note that there is a washer behind the second nut on the spindle which incorporates a tab. The position of this tab is what restricts the movement of the switch mechanism to four positions only, so it must be replaced correctly if you remove it for any reason. I tested it before I packaged it up, so it should be okay. |

Thank you Prowler. |

And what would be the gain if it could be done?
On OS4 everything went from assembler or tighly coded high level compiler code to C code on GNU compilers, which means the introduction of a big bloat for code readability (which is of no use if you are a user). Have you seen how much OS4 takes to load? Just watch a couple of Youtube videos. Have you witnessed how unusable it is OS4 with 64MB of fastmem? I prefer any day a lean, and better performing experience from a 3.x tweaked kickstart, than a dodgy update, with no benefit to Amigas, only to sell some custom PPC hardware. |
